Hello everyone! It's time to announce our project for July this year. Since our Sweethearts Week is such a big hit every year, we're going to take that idea and turn it into a USxUK SUMMER CAMP! This means a month long celebration of USxUK love, complete with prizes and the works. We hope that as many people as possible participate! It starts on July 1st and runs for 4 weeks, ending on July 28th!
The object of the project is for members to collect camp badges. Badges will be passed out by mods in reply to posts that have earned them. There are several ways in which to earn badges, and there's no limit to the amount of badges you can collect. Members who collect the most badges will be awarded prizes.
How do I earn camp badges?
One Badge Per:
1. Doujinshi scanned- less than thirty-five pages
2. Doujinshi scanlated- less than twenty pages
3. Fan Video (Your creation. Linking to MAD videos does not count.)
4. Significant sized icon/graphics batch (Twenty-five plus icons, Five plus headers/wallpapers/banners, Three plus manga colors)
5. Fanfic of less than one thousand words completed on day’s theme. Fic must be at least five hundred words to qualify for a camp badge.
6. Fanart, black and white or monochromatic, completed on day's theme. Obvious work should be put into this. Please no quick doodles, like mochi in the margin of your notebooks or something you threw together in five minutes in MSPaint.
7. FST (fan soundtrack)
8. Something else? Ask in reply here, and we'll let you know if it qualifies or not.
Two Badges Per:
1. Doujinshi scanned- more than thirty-five pages
2. Doujinshi scanlated- more than twenty pages
3. Fan Video (Your creation. Linking to MAD videos does not count. This is at moderator discretion. A slideshow will not get you two badges, but a personally illustrated or created MAD video will, for example.)
4. Significant sized icon/graphics batch (Fifty plus icons, ten plus wallpapers/banners/headers, six plus manga colors)
5. Fanfic of more than one thousand words completed on day’s theme.
6. Fanart, full color, or fancomic (does not need to be colored) of more than one page, completed on day's theme. Obvious work should be put into these.
Is there anything that can earn more camp badges than that? There's always room for exceptions. If someone writes a 10k fic for a theme, does a lengthy inked comic, personally illustrates an elaborate MAD video, etc., you just may get an extra badge or few. It will be at mod discretion, but we promise we'll be fair with this.
Everything posted must be NEW. It cannot be a fan video you made two months ago, or a doujinshi you posted to
hetalia, but have yet to post here. It needs to be unposted material. There is no limit to how much you can post.
For fic writers and artists, we've compiled a list of 28 themes for you to challenge yourselves with! Completing a fanwork for one of these themes will earn you camp badge(s). The catch is that the fanwork must be posted on the day of the theme; i.e. if you write a fic for the 'sports' theme, it has to be posted by the end of July 19th. You can post it on a later day, but it won't earn you any badges. We're showing you the themes in advance so you can get started now! We're not going to be stringent on time zones. As long as it is posted before GMT -11 hours hits midnight, it's good. That's the last time zone to pass into the next day. Here's a world clock to
keep track of that.
You may do AS MANY pieces of fic or art for each theme as you wish. Each one will earn one or two badges (or more), depending on the above stipulations. Other badges-earners (i.e. doujinshi scans, icons, fsts, fan videos) outside of fic and art do not need to fit the theme.
I'll be posting at the beginning of each day to remind you what the daily theme is.
Fic/Art Daily Themes:
- HERO WEEK -
July 1st: Hero- Since both of our boys have it in them to be heroes, this is a theme dedicated to that. The idea of a hero is fairly broad, and as such we're leaving it broad for you. Superheroes, military heroes, fairytale heroes, just-saving-the-day-heroes, personal heroes, everyday heroes, the list goes on.
July 2nd: First Aid- Got a bandaid? A scrape on the knee, an injury on the battlefield, stuck in a hospital bed, etc. As long as first aid is being administered somewhere in the story, whether it's actually doing it or just learning it, you can use it.
July 3rd: Science- Anything and everything related to science is good for this theme. Performing scientific experiments, seeing science first hand, scientific breakthroughs, geeking out on science, watching a science show, etc. Whether it's chemistry or dinosaurs or medical miracles, it's all welcome here.
July 4th: Happy Birthday!- Today's America's birthday, so of course we're going to celebrate. Fanworks should include an American Independence Day theme. It can be during or about the Revolutionary War or it can be a fourth of July long past that/modern. Anything is good as long as it's relevant to the characters and July 4th.
July 5th: Military- Any sector of the armed forces is welcome here, from both the US and the UK. Whether it's America and England in uniform, in combat, attending a military observance, or in another military role, everything is welcome. Military from ANY era is okay.
July 6th: Fast Food- Fairly self-explanatory. Be creative with this! Really, we won't be picky. It doesn't need to be an actual fast food establishment they're at. They can be at a park picnicking, cooking out, etc. Just casual dining, or something featuring a traditionally fast food item.
July 7th: Aviation- Keep 'em flying! Aviation is the theme here. You are welcome to use planes, but you do not have to. ANY airborne device is okay- windsails, hot air balloons, blimps, etc. Just as long as aviation is somehow featured; whether it's aviation clothing they're wearing, or they're in a craft, or whatever.
- ARTS and CRAFTS WEEK -
July 8th: Music- Music is a huge part of culture, and this theme is all about that. Anything to do with music is fair game. Singing, playing instruments, listening to music, dancing to music, talking about music, etc.
July 9th: Gardening- Flowers and plants, gardening and greenhouses. Anything to do with a green thumb goes here; whether it's growing a garden, giving someone flowers, surveying wild plants, or anything of the sort.
July 10th: Period Piece- Love clothing and culture from the past? This is for you. The fanworks in this theme must either take place before 1935 (right before the dawn of WWII), or be a throwback to that time period (i.e. them attending a Victorian costume ball in modern times). AU is of course welcome here (as it is in any theme). You can use any era pre-1935, no matter how far back.
July 11th: Games- This theme is for games of the non-sports variety (there is a sports theme later for that). Board games, little competitions, video games, bedroom games, childhood games, you name it. Of course they don't have to be playing the game. They can be talking about it, watching it, be analogized to it, etc.
July 12th: Literature- Books, novels, poetry, and prose. Please do not use plays here, as that's for the theater theme. They can be reading a book, discussing a book, featured in a crossover with a book, etc. It's up to you.
July 13th: Sewing- Pick up your needle and thread for this theme. Sewing, quilting, embroidering, patching things up, tailoring, crocheting, etc. Anything that involves any of these is fair game.
July 14th: Theater- Whether musicals or plays, Shakespeare or Sondheim, this theme is all about the theater. It could be performing a musical, seeing a Broadway/West End production, reading a play, cast in a crossover as characters from a musical/play, paralleling something to theater, etc.
- GREAT OUTDOORS WEEK -
July 15th: Hiking/Camping- Anything involving traversing the great outdoors hiking and camping style! You can mix up the hiking a bit and include climbing, spelunking, etc. Whether they're cooking out at a campground, or climbing a mountain trail, it's all welcome.
July 16th: Nighttime- Lights out! Anything is welcome, as long as it takes place at night and is at least somewhat relevant to it being as such. Whether they're out looking at the stars or inside the house, it's welcome.
July 17th: Animals- Whether wild or domesticated, animals are the theme here. ANYTHING involving animals is welcome, EXCEPT for Nekotalia (because there is a separate theme for that later on).
July 18th: Sightseeing- No matter where they are in the world, there's something to see! America and England go sightseeing, and it's up to you where they go or what they do. It can be something as epic as the Pantheon or as silly as the World's Largest Ball of Yarn.
July 19th: Sports- Both America and England have a rich sports culture, with sports of their own and sports they share. Any sport can be used. They can be playing it, watching it, learning, etc.
July 20th: Supernatural- America has a pet alien, and England has his fairy friends, making a supernatural an ideal theme for the pair. Ghost stories, legends, mythology, horror, aliens, fairies, beasts of folklore. If it involves something not entirely of this world, you can do it here.
July 21st: Road Trip- Taking to the road together! Note that this does NOT need to be in a car. They can be taking a boattrip, riding horses, etc. Just as long as the idea of a roadtrip (a fairly lengthy trip to reach a destination, or to stop at destinations along the way), is there.
- WORKING TOGETHER WEEK -
July 22nd: Correspondence- How do they communicate with each other when they're not face to face? Email, Skype, letters, phone calls, etc. Anything about America and England corresponding with each other. It can take place during any era, of course.
July 23rd: Rain- Whether it's a shower or a storm, a freezing rain or a warm sunshower, your fanwork must feature rain in some way shape or form. They can be outside in it, thinking about it, inside but soaking wet from it, etc.
July 24th: Smile- Share a smile? The fanwork must feature the theme smile/smiling in some way shape or form. This should be pretty self explanatory.
July 25th: Tea/Coffee- The beverages of choice for England and America respectively. Either tea, coffee, or both must be featured in the fanwork somewhere. They can be drinking it, discussing it, going to/working at a place that sells it, etc.
July 26th: Nekotalia- Anything featuring Himaruya's Nekotalia universe. It can be the cats by themselves, the cats with normal America and England, etc.
July 27th: Tropical Vacation- Because taking a trip down to the tropics always sounds like a great idea. America and England go on a tropical vacation! Are they on a cruise, staying at an island hotel, scuba diving, sunbathing, or what? It's up to you. As for a location that would constitute a 'tropical vacation,' I'll leave it up to you. I trust you won't have them sipping drinks in the Yukon or something. XD
July 28th: Love- This is the last theme of summer camp, so you get a nice, vague, simple one. Love! The idea of love must be featured in your fanwork. Go wild!
Pieces can be any genre, any rating, etc. Fic and art can be either canon or alternate universe for all the themes.
Now as for the prizes!
For this month long summer camp, we will have weekly winners and our overall winners. For example, those earning the most badges during our "Great Outdoors" week will earn a prize. Then, those who have the most badges overall, at the end of the month, will also receive a prize. This way, if you're going to be on vacation one week you can still at least try for a weekly prize even if you can't make the overall prizes.
We will be awarding at least the top three overall. Weekly prizes will depend on how many people participate each week. If there is a tie, we will draw for the winner.
There will be a selection of prizes to pick from. First place winner gets to pick a prize first, then second, then third.
THERE WILL ALSO BE A RAFFLE DRAWING.
ANYONE can enter this. I'll be setting up a post, and you must comment if you wish to be a part of it. A name will be picked at random (of course), and that person will be allowed to choose a prize. We may award more than one raffle prize like we did last year.
Prizes will be the following:
1- USxUK Doujinshi (these will not all be R-18, so don't worry if you don't want porn)
2- Yesasia and CDJapan gift certificates
3- LJ Paid Accounts
4- Other misc. ideas we will come up with.
We've designed the prizes to hopefully appeal to everyone. We know that some people may not be able to receive prizes in the mail, and that's why we're offering up the gift certificates as well.
Reply here if you have any questions!
We hope you're all excited for this project, and that a lot of you decide to participate. USxUK Summer Campers, we'll see you on July 1st!
