Young native Americans were forced to cut their hair when they were being assimilated by the churches. They were also forbidden to speak their native languages.

I cut my hair once to get a job, didn't get it, and decided I'd keep it long from there on out. Fuck this society, and it's stupid stereotypes.

The Sioux also respected General Custer because he wore his hair long. The longer the hair, the better the trophy when you scalp your opponent after a battle.
