My own personal take is that the writers and produces were making this shit up as they went along, had only a vague notion of where they were going with the show, and never really developed a true story arc for any of the characters. Hence the icon choice. :-D
That's pretty much the truth of it. Haha. I've been reading stuff lately about fandoms for my Master's Paper (I'm that nerdy, yes) and one of the big things that keeps coming up is how "cult tv is open-ended even when it's over." Basically the more holes they leave the more the crazy fans will geek. I'm rewatching BSG now and I'm just like "you know, the Final Five Cylons make NO SENSE AT ALL in this context." Just... yeah.
I think that's why I don't write much B5 fanfic (although I read it when it's good). The story was essentially complete by the end of the five year arc, and JMS didn't leave us many holes to fill. Which is fine, really, because the story was whole and ended on a very satisfying (if sad) note.
