Oh, yeah? Well, they're basically big challenges for you and your Pokémon, to prove that you've been training well. [Chie pulls a badge out of her bag and shows it off.] Your team goes up against the gym leader's team, just like a regular trainer battle.
Most of them give you a useful move to teach your team, too! Like, when I beat the gym in Cianwood, I'll be able to teach one of my partners to fly.
[ Hitomi feels a bit of pity and sympathy for this stranger; just from what she's heard, Hitomi can gather that Chie's been sad. And she can't keep herself from wanting to encourage her resolve. ]
Such an admirable spirit. We have not spoken before, but I will be wishing you the very best of luck, Miss.
Pleased to meet you too! Now, let's see... The four badges I'm missing are all in different directions. I'm thinking I might go for the one in Cianwood first, 'cause you get the Fly HM when you win. That'll make the traveling a lot easier!
[he sloooowly approaches you with a couple of bags slung over his shoulder.] If you don't mind, I'd like to join you. [he pauses as he looks down and sheepishly rubs the back of his neck.] was gonna ask you, but I didn't know when the right time was.
[Until Rise mentioned him, Chie hadn't really given much thought to how Kanji must be feeling. More of that selfishness that she needs to shed. Chie loves Yukiko, sure, but Kanji loves Naoto. There's an undeniable difference there.
Her response is immediate. If there's anything she can do to help him out, she's gonna do it.] Of course you can come, Kanji-kun! I can't think of anybody I'd rather have along.
[That grin is infectious, and Chie finds herself smiling back.] I was thinking maybe we could hit Cianwood first! I've been wanting to get the Fly HM for a while now, and that'll make the rest of it easier.
[She pauses, brow furrowed.] Come to think of it, what badges do you still need? Are you going for 'em too?
[OH HEY CHIE... for all sakes and purposes, Heather REALLY should have called Chie sooner. WAY sooner, in fact-- but things had been a little crazy, and, well, she'd also sort of been trying to... avoid thinking about it.]
[But almost a whole month had passed since it had happened, and it was finally time to accept the facts.]
[She now had a mutant toddler following her everywhere.]
[AND SO, Heather appears on the screen, coughing slightly.]
Sounds like a plan!
... So, uh.
[Way to use this post as a springboard to launch into an uncomfortable topic, Heather.]
Hey, Heather! [Chie waves cheerfully, not catching Heather's discomfort at first. It takes her a moment to remember the egg in question; it's been so long since that egg-fest, after all.]
Oh, yeah! The Tyrogue egg, right? Man, I almost forgot all about it. Did it hatch okay?
[It had only sat in her bag distinctly NOT hatching for... what, five months? Occasionally displaying signs of life, of course.... In hindsight, that had been sort of ominous, and Heather's actually surprised that 'UNDEAD BABY' hadn't occurred to her earlier.]
And uhh... I guess that'd depend.
Is a Tyrogue supposed to basically look kinda like a mutated toddler with pants?

[Chie nods and grins, determination clear.] Don't worry, I will! What kinda senpai would I be if I didn't?

Y-Yeah, that's, uh, pretty accurate, I guess. Kinda purplish with ridges on his head? That's what Bruce looked like before he evolved.
