Character
Name: Squall "Leon" Leonhart
Series: Kingdom Hearts
Timeline: Post-KH2.
Canon Resource Links: Here!

Affiliation: Trainer

Personality:
Leon gave up his true name. He locked it away, promising never to use it again until he was sure all his 'mistakes' were righted. He was--and still is--convinced that he was too weak to protect those he loved from the Heartless invasion of his home world. As a result, he gave himself a new name and a fresh start, trying to shake off his ghosts. Whether he will ever live up to his own heightened expectations is doubtful, but what’s certain is that this single event, and its fallout, has continued to influence the man he has grown into, even a decade into the future.

Leon is still like Squall, in many ways. At twenty-six*, the sullen teenage attitude has been erased, replaced instead by a brooding demeanour. He’s more articulate, but he’s still not talkative. He has better social skills, but he’s still not a people person. He’s stubborn; his emotions are very subdued; he doesn’t like to have to rely on others, but he’s more open to it; his trust is incredibly slow to gain, as Sora is unfortunately aware.

That said, time has certainly taken the edge off: he has a very strong bond with Cid, Aerith and Yuffie, who are the closest thing he has to a family. Yuffie, and presumably the two others as well, know his true name, and Yuffie is confident enough he won’t get angry with her that she uses it in public. He has developed an almost brotherly bond with Sora, a sort of mentor-trainee relationship. He and Cloud share a firm friendship, enough to be light-hearted with each other while surrounded by enemy hordes. Even though he doesn’t like to depend on others, he knows when to step back and let Cid handle the technology; trusts Yuffie and Cloud to have his back in a fight; and while he expresses concern over leaving Aerith alone in a hostile situation, one determined look is all it takes to convince him otherwise. He may never say it--in fact, he may protest it--but he does deeply care for his friends. He’s exceedingly loyal and wouldn’t hesitate to protect them if he needs to.

He won’t go out of his way to talk to people, but certainly won’t shy away from a conversation; still, he does periodically need some alone time, as when he retreats to train alone in Traverse’s underground waterway. He’s not a gifted orator, but when something needs to be said he won’t keep it to himself. He is able to convince Yuna, Rikku and Paine to help out the Restoration Committee, even though he couldn’t really give them anything for their trouble, so on some level he’s only as good with words as he really needs to be.

He’s a very driven individual and strongly self-motivated; in his teenage years, after the exile to Traverse Town, it was him who started a rebel group to keep one district in the town safe from the Heartless. It was a tall order, considering that without a Keyblade the Heartless were impossible to defeat permanently. He also traveled to other recently-fallen worlds, picking up refugees and taking them back to Traverse. He researched the Heartless and won the respect of Disney Castle’s King Mickey. Once back home in Radiant Garden, he leads a group dedicated to restoring the once-beautiful city to its former glory. While Leon probably doesn’t think of himself as a leader, he tends to fall into that role, as it is vastly suited to his forward-thinking, practical mentality. He doesn’t like standing still; he needs to have a goal, a purpose. He can’t handle just standing idle while there’s action around, especially if others are in trouble. He may not go through the trouble of getting to know a stranger, but he’ll always drop everything to rescue one from danger.

*Possibly twenty-seven, as we do not know the exact span of time during which the events of KH2 take place. The official Kingdom Hearts website gave his age as twenty-five, and it has been over one year canonically since the first game in the series. Until proven otherwise, I’m going with 26.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Leon has over ten years’ experience wielding a Gunblade, not that it matters much here. He also has about a decade’s worth of knowledge on military strategy and refugee management, and on a related note probably has a decent grasp of carpentry and plumbing. He isn’t overly book-smart, as he was presumably unable to finish his education, but he is capable of grasping scientific literature of his world, as when he, Yuffie and Aerith are seen reading the ancient books in the Hollow Bastion library. He also knows how to use a computer, but definitely isn't anywhere on Cid's level. He still trusts Aerith to handle most of the brainwork, and Cid to handle the tech; Leon is comfortable doing most of the heavy lifting in exchange.

In terms of weaknesses: Leon is a man of few words. His social skills are sub-par and he’s easy to dislike because of it; when he met Sora for the first time, he was a complete and utter jerk to the kid, and it took a few visits before he began to warm up. He’s stubborn and hard to handle sometimes, and his trust is very slow to gain. More than anything, Leon is afraid of losing those who matter most to him; if you can pick up on that, he’s easy to rile up.

Samples

First Person Sample:
[ The feed goes live right outside Union cave. Leon has a trace of dirt, or mud, on his cheek and neck; the white fur trim of his jacket is clumpy with it. Someone bit the dust in there, but he’s rocking the line face, as usual. ] I just caught an…‘Onix’. Right. I think that’s what they’re called. Skarmory did well.

[ That explains the mud. His voice is oddly shaky, as if he can’t get the right tone, and he periodically rubs one of his ears, as if it’s in pain--your character can recognize the after-effects of Screech if they’ve been through it. There’s a small pause as he pulls out the poke ball, examining it. He looks vaguely contemplative. He’s talking as he walks, and the camera is panning up at his face at an angle. The sky flashes overhead. ]

There was a man in Azalea town who mentioned these the balls used to be made from hollowed-out…nuts, or fruits or something. Apparently it’s a dying art, but it can still be done. [ He frowns. When he presses the button, the ball expands with a slight noise. He doesn’t release the beast, though; presumably it needs to see a pokémon center first. ] This thing must’ve been thirty feet, give or take. And now it fits in the palm of my hand. [ The ball shrinks. He reattaches it to his belt. ] I’d be curious to find out more about the technology behind these things. Seems beyond anything I’ve ever seen.

Third Person Sample:
[ Aerith used with player's permission. ]

Leon reached the pokémon center before the evening rush, so he didn’t have to wait in line to have his team sorted out. He knew he could’ve gone to the much nearer Azalea town for a break, but he and Aerith had decided to stay in Violet and he didn’t mind the longer walk.

Skarmory was worse for wear after weakening the onix; he’d originally just wanted a quick bout to give her some battle experience, but when he’d seen the huge snake just lying there, looking like a pile of rubble--and after putting up such a great fight--he hadn’t really thought about it, just thrown the pokéball. Now he was mildly annoyed with himself, wondering what he was going to do with a massive snake made out of rocks. Possibly one with an attitude, to go by the aggression he’d seen in the cave. Trying to make a fighter out of Skarmory was already tiring enough, but having to curb the violent tendencies of a monster whose head was bigger than Leon’s entire body was mildly off-putting.

After collecting his team, he debated going out again or staying in. He would have rather trained more, but he was dirty and somewhat tired after getting slammed into a cave wall by an ill-aimed attempt at Bind. Pulling up the phone on his pokégear, he checked to see if he had any missed calls from Aerith. Seeing none, he wondered if she’d taken Chansey out shopping, or was working. Violet City wasn’t entirely lacking in entertainment; maybe if he showered quickly, they could meet up and pool their money, maybe have decent food at a restaurant or something.

Unexpectedly, the thought made him pause, not so much by its rarity but instead by how mundane it felt. The reality of his situation--how he still wasn’t home, how there were still whole districts of their city that needed to be built and he wasn’t there and how angry at himself he felt for just accepting it--came crashing back to him and, as often happened when emotions like this came upon him, he started noticing the infernal music again.

His earlier upbeat mood completely soured, he shut the phone and breathed slowly. He quickly decided he’d take a shower later; he wasn’t nasty enough to subject any of his friends to his current disposition, anyways. For now, he needed to have a long, ideally distracting training session with Onix.
