It is curious, isn't it?
I would have expected him the least of being able to convince you of something like that.
But if you spend most of your time watching over him, it's good that he's able to reciprocate the gesture in at least some small way - no matter how he somehow managed to do so.
I take it you feel a little mixed up about it, don't you?

I can certainly see how this could lend itself to pale feelings as well.

Certainly.
You're doing your best to keep him from being a harm to himself and others, watching out for actions that might end up with him injured and making sure to keep him under the influence of Paras' mushrooms to insure no one else falls victim to the violence he's proven he's capable of.
And despite all warnings you were given, you decided to span those three days with little sleep, against better judgment and words from an actual human who therefor would know.
Yet Gamzee was able to coax you into the rest you needed.
Now I won't preach that my knowledge of Moirallegiance is anywhere near as extensive or understanding as yours is, but that certainly sounds like a case that could turn into one quite easily, if both parties are willing.
And I really, really have a hard time believing that Gamzee would say no.
