[Presumably, this little encounter takes place before he heads upstairs to chill out comfortably in Niou Kingdom, which means Yagyuu's still hanging out on his amazing couch (quite possibly with the World's Most Timid Fox hiding beneath it), tracking Fuji with his eyes and casually hiding the books he's been reading beneath one of the throw pillows.]

It's a pitifully small number for a record, isn't it?

[if he notices the books quietly disappearing from view, he doesn't show it. rather, he finds the coaster and pads back to lean against the table, putting the coaster down but not relinquishing his cup.]

I could take that as a challenge to beat it. [pondering!] On the other hand, it could be foreshadowing for your next missive, which might even be longer than this one. Even still, it could be your way of saying that someone has already beaten it.

It's hard to say, isn't it?

It could also be my way of questioning whether it's really worth turning into a competition at all. Sometimes a journal is just a journal.

[And he shrugs a little, leaning forward a bit to peer down at the foot of the couch as if expecting to see a tiny nose or the tip of a red-brown tail.]
