That's an interesting question.

I... suppose I miss my occupation.

That's a pretty good thing to miss. What did you work with?

I was a student. I just love learning things so much.

[Hear the ENTHUSIASM in his voice.]

Oh, my bad then. What did you study?

[That is some enthusiasm you got there. I nearly fell off my chair.]

Osaka. [Yep. The city.]

I miss th'castle an' how they turn it into a little festival for th'cherry blossoms... th'lights on Tsutenkaku at night... Gettin' hauled out shopping t'Ame-mura an'Dotonbori by Kazuha... All th'traditional theatres an'museums, th'shrine I drug Kudo to...

[Ah, the occasional attacks of pure wibbly homesickness. Get the feeling he could go on like this for a while?] Tenjin-matsuri'd be comin' up pretty soon here, at th'end of th'month with th'fireworks over th'canals and th'Castle, there's baseball games goin' on at th'Dome...

An' th'Okonomiyaki place just downtown from th'main station, an'the food - y'just don't get restaurants like that here. Not only can y'get just about any kind of cooking if y'look, but the cooks take PRIDE in their work, an' I haven't even been able t'get decent takoyaki since I got here without makin' it myself, but when I went t'get a job at a restaurant, I keep gettin' told I'm too young t'be one of th'cooks even though I KNOW I could do better! [He's listening intently, struggling a little to get past the accent but taking it in nonetheless - there's so much comfortable familiarity about talking about home like this. They used to do it back at the 4077th all the time, kill a couple of hours by just talking aimlessly about home and all the things they couldn't wait to get back to.

He's actually preparing a similar lengthy speech about his own dear hometown. Beware. ]

It's pretty different from the good ol' US of A, I'll give you that. I spent a lot of time in Asia - Korea mostly - so it's not as bad as it could be.

Never been t'Korea; I'd like t'travel more one day, but I haven't been out of Japan yet... got a buddy on th'Kendo team who's from America, he's helped me with my English. [And if it were possible to switch languages here, it'd be a little hysterical, since his English is -perfectly clear-.] Can't say I'm familiar enough t'place accents, though.

What part're you from? [Oh, go right ahead - he's always happy to hear about places and things he hasn't seen.]

The last three years I've been stationed near Uijeongbu - lovely place, if you don't mind the bomb craters. Tokyo's nice too, never did get the opportunity to see more of Japan though.

I'm from Maine, more specifically a small town called Crabapple Cove. I don't expect you to have ever heard of it, it's the kind of city where everyone knows everyone else and the donkeys wear felt hats. Great place to grow up in though... it's been a while since I was there.

There's a little Chinese bakery where I live that I used to frequent. They make the smallest donuts I have ever seen. In terms of community property that's one thing I miss.

I also occasionally miss my job, but I imagine that goes for a lot of people here. The options for work are few.

[He says all of this rather quickly, but with a thoughtful air. Yes, why not discuss this.]

It's usually food that we miss the most, isn't it? I had a buddy from Toledo who got so homesick for hotdogs that he went through the trouble of having some shipped half-way across the world.

And I can't argue about the lack of work - it sure seems like you can't get anything above entry-level no matter how overqualified you are.

I don't think I'm that desperate just yet. [He sounds amused saying it.] I guess with food it comes down to the comfort of it. It's a routine and a familiarity.

Overqualified is a good word. Leads to no small amount of frustration. Not to mention the paperwork the Centers will give you is a killer.

It does bring out memories of a different time and place easier than most things. Maybe it's the fact that it hits all your senses or possibly because it's temporary - you can change your perception of a photo with time but food is always like a slice of memory. A culinary time machine, if you will.

Oh, tell me about it! I thought the daily reports were bad but this is disproportionally ridiculous!

And I think we have a winner.

I'd even settle for a bus. A tram. Anything that's better than this.

You the glory of knowing you got your priorities straight.

Y'know, that's not a bad idea. I don't get why no one's ever thought of setting up a transport system like that before - it can't be that hard and it would make travelling a lot safer.

Milk, huh? That's good, you gotta drink your milk if you want to be strong when you grow up.
