I really loved John throwing the pin at Kyle, too, and doing it for two reasons - one of which didn't even occur to Kyle, I don't think (how he lost his parents).

I think Kyle accepts his parents' death almost more than John does sometimes. As in that it isn't on his mind as much. I'm thinking that I'll need to do a introspective about him and his parents at some point, though.

This part kind of also had more of a 'every day' kind of feel, showing just in general what life was like, just showing the little things. I guess

I think that's what made me not like it very much - there doesn't seem to be much use of it for either plot or character development. There just doesn't seem to have much going on. But, oddly, the only reason this part was kept is because it's actually the set up to the main plot of this story, as you probably are beginning to see from the other part :p
