Banned Books Week Challenge

Oct 03, 2007 10:59

I challenge everyone to read at least one of these books over the next week. These are the books most frequently challenged during the decade of 1990 to 2000. I will bold all the books I have read and will italicize the one I will read this week. (Actually the one I' hope to read, doubt if I'll get around to it this week ( Read more... )

what is the objection to Cujo or the Dead Zone...then again I don't get people who think censorism is a good thing...but I at least get the books on gay/lesbian/religious grounds from the wacko population but I'm pretty sure Cujo has no religious over-tones, it's about a rabid dog..whatever..plz explain this craziness to me...

I've never heard of about 90% of them, I have read "To kill a mockingbird", it was required reading in my high school. I've read "Catcher in the Rye", and "Harry Potter"; and "Tom Sawyer" and "Huck Finn" were required in school, their main sticky point is the black man.
I'm surprised "Goosebumps" is on there, its geared towards kids around 10 to 14. "Where's Waldo" is on there!!
Well, thanks for posting the list, I will now have to look up some of the books and read them. BTW, I didn't see any italicized books.

A fair number of these books are ones which I haven't read. But, because I am a children's literature specialist, there are definitely many which I have read. If you are interested in reading some of the ones you haven't yet read, I recommend these two titles most highly:

My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier
This is the one I would recommend the most. I read it a few years back, as an adult, and it shocked me. It is very, very heavy. The story is about the Revolutionary War, and it is not real favorable to Washington's army. I can see why some of the John Birch type people would be offended with it, but it is very well written and won a Newbery. I doubt you would be bored with it.

My other favorite for heavy reading is:
To Kill a Mockingbird
That book took me forever to get out of my brain! It is one of the heaviest books I have ever read (mental and emotional heavy; it stays with me still in a good way). I recommend it quite highly.

I guess this just reinforces what awesome teachers I had growing up, because I read a LOT of these for school. :)

Thanks for posting this, I love to broaden my horizons. It's always good to be aware of the words and ideas which some folks think you shouldn't see. ;)
