Walking in my sleep

Aug 14, 2010 00:39

I've now been in Boulder for a week, and am beginning to feel like I'm settling in. Unfortunately, moving in had a few complications---the fellow moving out of my apartment was sick last week, which delayed his packing, and my current flatmate had previously booked travel home to New York for this week. So while I've made good headway on setting ( Read more... )

Offhand, I'd guess the undergrads will improve the place. This is in fairly stark contrast to most college towns, but I think I may roll my eyes at wealthy Boulder perhaps a little more vigorously (and unfairly) than you do. Anyway, I hope it's an improvement, because they'll certainly be there for a large fraction of the year.

That sounds like a kickass store. Fountain pen ink without paying for shipping? I am envious.

Good news on the TAship, congrats! Good luck continuing to settle in.

Oh, I certainly roll my eyes (and am gradually compiling a list of priceless "Oh, Boulder" moments that I'll have to post at some point). But I haven't yet managed to let the ridiculousness of some Boulder residents taint my perceptions of the town as a whole. Maybe I'm still in a honeymoon phase, relishing the contrasts to Salt Lake ( ... )

Not much time in Boulder; a few times, a couple days each, visiting a friend from college.

Undergrads are undergrads, as a class if not as individuals, but I'd bet they'll be less football-crazed in Boulder, at least.

I've only ever used cartridges. Do you use a pen with a reservoir, or refillable cartridges? How does it work?

Re: Pen---Sort of both, actually. I use a converter, which is a refillable reservoir that fits where a cartridge would otherwise go. I can stick the nib end of the pen into a bottle of ink, and draw ink up into the pen, sort of like a syringe. I think it holds a bit more ink than most cartridges do, and bottled ink is much much cheaper.

'When I talked to the department secretary (wanting to get the ink dry on my contract as soon as possible), I was told that "you don't want to know how this came about."'

As you already are aware, the department secretary knows all and is all-powerful. They must have meant it. Stay on their good side.

Indeed. I've already signed on as a last-minute volunteer driver for the departmental retreat on Friday.
