This is just lovely - I was mentioning recently (for NaBloPoMo) that I hadn't seen much Little Mermaid fic at all, and this is just perfection.

A friend of mine pointed out that Miyazaki's Ponyo is a retelling of the Little Mermaid. I hadn't noticed but I can see it now that I'm looking for it.

Whereas about 2/3 through my first viewing I realized it has the same underlying moral as all the Pokemon movies: "Do NOT mess with the LEGENDARY POKEMON," which is to say kami. They may be friendly; that doesn't make them SAFE. Doing things that seem perfectly reasonable to our tiny human minds can end with, well, entire shorelines underwater and all kinds of mess. :->
