Oh man, the segment in Planet Earth that shows them hunting is chillingly awesome. Those who haven't seen it and are interested can watch it here (though unfortunately it is not the version with David Attenborough narrating).
I saw these guys for the first time at the Bronx Zoo yesterday and was friggin *scared* -- I'd rather jump into the lion exhibit on feeding day than be within range of these dogs. The lions at least like to nap.
At Perth Zoo some years ago, the Painted Dogs were accidentally fed horse meat that had steroids in it- the Alpha Male and all the pups but one died. Fortunately the Alpha Bitch survived, they brought over a new male for her, and they now have about a dozen pups...
These dogs are beautiful. I'm sad that the Toledo Zoo changed up their exhibit only because they are now hard to see unless you pay to ride the lame train. They used to have an exhibit that was easily viewable. They do have a bigger enclosure right now so I shouldn't be so selfish.

I'm constantly astonished that Sir David was replaced by Sigourney Weaver for an American audience...
