That was just the reason why I decided to stop eating meat two years ago... just for the sake that it is SO easy to eat it. It´s everywhere and in every possible meal. Why?, I asked myself and started to get it out of the system.
Back then I decided that I´d actually eat meat if it was "worth it"... meaning something I really like and crave at that moment. After that I found out how rarely I really wanted anything "meaty".

If you can hands down GIVE UP a food for a year then I"m impressed. Especially something you love.. I would advice for almost anyone to moderate it--only fried potatos on fridays, for example. Or "only one "sweet thing" a day" (be it a piece of hard candy, or a cookie, or a slice of cheese cake) ... in my experience, it's a lot easier to cut back then go cold turkey... and if forces you to think about things more "If I eat this thing now, I can't have anything else Iater today." .. and it will ensure that what you eat is what you enjoy, and not just being eaten because it's there. Plus, being able to go "I can have it tommorow" makes it far more unlikely that you'll break one day, and snowball terribly into Christmas from there :) The same applies to fried potatoes, of course :) But of course, you are far more aware of what you are capable of doing then I am :) But that's the advice I'd give almost anymore in your position ( ... )

Thanks for that!

I'm very compulsive, and previous attempts to moderate have failed. In 2011 I did successfully give up sweets for the year. I allow myself to eat desserts that are mostly fruit, and I don't count drinks. I really don't care about cookies and candy, and yet I eat a ton just because they're in arms reach. If I just give myself the rule that I can't eat any, then I won't. If I give myself the rule that I can eat some under some conditions, the whole thing falls apart.

Portion control is very wise, and I have been working on that one. Trying not to have seconds--even if there's "plenty!" (I hate to waste food) and saving leftovers for lunch has been helping.

I understand that. I'm pretty compulsive myself. I can't buy candy anymore because the knowledge that it's in the house means I muuuust eat it. I have a thing of mini candy bars (about 10 or so) that my friend gave me for christmas (it came in a pretty tin and money's tight all around this year so it isn't a lame gift!) and I"m pretty proud that I still have several of them despite me opening it about 2 weeks ago (we had Christmas early).. ... normally it's a very strong impulse.. I was speaking to a friend of mine who had diagnosed OCD, and we were describing the same thing. ANd I have a few 'ocd' traits (though I don't claim to have 'OCD' in any significant fasion... just incredibly mild impulses regarding numbers of objects and organization... ) ... so, I definetly understand what you mean ( ... )

While I agree with alexis's sentiments, Im kinda with you on the fried potato thing... not so much as a principle, but just in the sense that, with being on the road ALL the time, I am trying not to eat them as a simple meal filler, and stick to only eating them when they are something special (big chunky tater wedges? sure! stringy soggy fast food fries? nah, I'll just get the horrible for me sammich today, thanks) or if I'm majorly craving them, cuz why deprive myself all the time?

I'm not sure if your "fried potatos" also includes chips, but that wont be an issue for me, I gave them up in a fit of healthy eating nearly 10 years ago. I still eat tortilla chips, and occasionally I'll have a handful of tater chips if I'm at a party or cookout, but I dont actively seek them out, refuse them if they come with meals, and really, don't miss them at all anymore. I'm hoping I can similarly wean myself off of fries.

Good luck!
