I have to say things like "redback" referring to a harmless salamander just to make sure you're still on livejournal.

The spider looks like it might well be Amaurobius, possibly A similis or A fenestralis but I don't know what species of the genus you get in your area.

Bugguide.net is surprisingly mum, but I like the looks of A. borealis.

Callobius looks pretty good too.
