A couple nights ago, I watched a couple random movies, stuff that just happened to be on. One was a New Zealand horror-fantasy movie I'd never heard of (Under the Mountain,) which wasn't exactly "bad" -- they were technically competent -- but it was pretty disjointed and had a plot from a thousand other movies. Holy cow... they made Under the Mountain into a movie? I have fuzzy recollections of seeing that as a mini-series on Nickelodeon a quarter of a century ago. Weird times.

Also, I can't believe I remembered that just from the name and that it was Kiwi... and that Wikipedia backed up my memory.

Yeah, I looked up that Wikipedia article after posting, and considering one's a movie and the other is an eight-part miniseries, and the plot differences, I think I can see why the movie wasn't very good. They probably cut or rewrote 70-75% of the material to fit it into two hours, and the redone parts didn't strike me as very good. First, isn't the miniseries about 11-year-olds? The movie is about teens instead. Possibly so that, when they added the cousin who's trying to hook up with some chick, it didn't seem too creepy. Second, it looks like the miniseries has the boy struggling to believe he really has magic powers, whereas that wasn't a theme in the movie at all; instead, he has to believe in his "twinness". Seems like a lamer theme than "believe in yourself ( ... )
