Cloverfield

I saw Cloverfield yesterday. It's actually a pretty damn good film, even though it has a few flaws, one of which I'll go into in a bit. I thought the scene in the tunnels, when they turn on the camera's night vision feature, was very effective, as was the first scene on the streets during the catastrophe. I didn't actually have a problem with the balance of before-footage and after-footage, because I felt like it was in the service of making the disaster feel like it occurred within people's actual lives. Kinda dumb lives, but, you know. And it was such a hilarious knife-twist to show the happy Coney Island trip, in among all the shoutings and runnings-about. It's possible that that stuff could have been cut down some, but apart from making me not care at all about the characters (totally unsure whether it was intentional or no), I thought the setup was cute.
