Turns out I'm not going to my sister's wedding on Feb 16th through 19th, as I originally thought. It would cost $450-$550 roundtrip, and that doesn't cover wedding clothes.
Whether or not I can afford to go to Dundracon (which is the same weekend) has yet to be determined.

Is this her first wedding?
The expense of relatives' transit is why M and I did not do a destination wedding or get married in Southern California. My mother had already invited everybody the moment I announced the engagement, and this included a number of poor relatives who were dependent upon my mother for a place to stay, if attending the wedding at all.
I think families tend to be more forgiving if it's a second marriage.
I am in another relationship now, and funny enough, my mom is already talking about a commitment ceremony... OMG.

This situation is hard because his side of the family is in Mexico, plus he can only take the weekend off, basically, so they can't really have the wedding too far away. But, when you move to another country and marry a citizen from that country, you have to expect it's going to be difficult getting both sides of the family together.

One advantage to being in a gay relationship is that my mom is NOT going to invite the relatives to the commitment ceremony if/when we have one. So. No guilt about where the location is.
Personally my feeling is that since we're not expected by society at large to have a wedding... I'm OFF THE HOOK.

I don't know if you followed this but I'm actually starting the prerequisites for the registered nursing program at SCC. I signed up for an online class so that I can be in the system for the harder-to-get classes in the fall.

Yeah, I noticed that you were accellerating your move to Sacramento. That's cool!
