Virus, day... 6?!?!

I'm back. Well, I'm sort of back. Internet Exploder is still fucked up, I'm just not using it anymore. :) I'd been meaning to download Firefox for ages anyway, and while I'm still trying to figure out exactly how all the bells and whistles work, I like the fact that I can use it without a zillion more infections hitting my system while I'm surfing ( Read more... )

computer, firefox, internet, my craptastic life, whee! virus!

Have you been going through your system32 folder as well? Because it hides the spawners in there too.

And with the registry - the files to be deleted there have alphanumberal names, not clear URLS - so I'm wondering if we were talking at cross purposes. Especially as now I'm thinking you've got a Mac, and so the reg edit and sys32 are actually going to be called something utterly different on a Mac...

Anyway, best of luck - but be aware that this virus sends stuff off independently of your browser as well.

Haven't even started on system32 yet. I guess I should take a look...

On the registry, mostly I just deleted what the spyhunter program found, and mostly that was stuff with urls. What kind of alphanumber thingys am I looking for?

Nope, I HAD a Mac, got rid of it ages ago. Though this week I'm kind of missing it...

If I haven't said so already, thanks for all your help & advice.

Start with the programs. Delete what they find, but do not stop there.

Uninstall your new nortons, because you'll need to clean reinstall after what I suggest, because what I'm suggesting will damage any software you've installed since the virus appeared.

You then need to manually delete files from two places, but the registry key I can't locate - need the asleep man for that, sorry. But its RegEdit or something of that ilk.

The other is a bit easier:

My computer --> C Drive --> WINDOWS --> system32 --> delete all the files in this folder which have a creation date of the day the virus showed up, or, if you don't shut your computer down, you will need to go back to the date you last shut it down.

Oy... I may just end up doing a clean reinstall of Windows and everything else, it actually sounds less scary than messing with the system32 stuff. Plus the last time I uninstalled all my Norton stuff, the computer freaked the hell out. It has issues to begin with, so I try not to make it mad if I can help it.
