Nesting

This morning I stepped out on my porch to see what birds were about, I've seen Eastern Phoebe's, Northern Mockingbirds, Sparrows, Robins, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Crows, a few Ravens, Downy Woodpeckers, Seagulls and of course..Starlings. Starlings, while annoying, are beautiful birds, when you look at them up close. Iridescence!

And the leaf skeleton is indeed beautiful. I've seen those on greeting cards. Lovely!

The starlings have, these past, oh, 10 years, had a nest above my bathroom. They got in through the shower vent to the outside. They sit on the tree outside the bathroom window and fly back and forth into the vent. Sometimes I can hear the hatchlings (not yet, too early) chirping away, or the skritch of tiny bird nails on the ceiling.

But I'm most amazed to find that the starlings (grackles? they look the same to my untrained eye) have the most amusing clicks, clatters, and whistles. Very varied. I think they're calling to mates from the tree outside the nest: "Look! Prime real estate! Move in Condition! No predators allowed insurance policy! Come and get it!"

i just took this pic of a grackle the other day. they're bigger than starlings and the yellow eye is a good identifier. :)
