I think those are actually wasps. I've been having quite a few encounters with them myself.

I'm fairly sure those are wasps, to be specific yellowjackets. They're quite ornery (do NOT squish one, no matter what you do -- they release 'come avenge me' chemicals. Drown if necessary) and are attracted to things like soda and sandwiches instead of to flowers and nectar.

Aggressively bad-tempered. Whereas actual honeybees are usually fairly sweet-tempered and inoffensive (they die when they sting, so they save it for emergencies).

I think those look like wasps too, and you're quite brave to get that close if they're anything like the English buggers we have here. I wouldn't leave that window open!

NIce! Yes, they are wasps. They may be yellow jackets, which you could determine by what kind of nest they were living in.

I agree - I think they ARE yellowjackets. They're out and about this time of year, too, as is evidenced in this sign from one of my local parks...
