I was going to ask you if you live in Staten Island, NY, but I checked out your user info, and then I realized, those things are EVERYWHERE. We're not going to have a zombie apocalypse, we're going to have a Turkey Apocalypse! Good thing they don't fly very far ...

Haha, it's true. Yeah, the weird thing is turkeys were unheard of in my city maybe three or four years ago, although I'd heard about them being elsewhere in MA - suddenly a small pack migrated here and it seems they brought friends.

Yeah, they range over quite a large territory, in spite of not being able to fly very far. They used to be localized in one particular area of Staten Island (around the psychiatric center where I used to work and a hospital up the block from the psych center), but they've moved into quite a wide area, and are now in some bad neighborhoods, where apparently guns and bullets are cheaper than meat, where some of them have met with an unfortunate demise, in spite of turkey hunting being illegal.

They propagate pretty regularly, too. Every spring there are new little turkeys (called poults) all around the psych center and the hospital.

How on earth do those things even get airborn? They're huge!

They have very big, very strong wings.

I've seen them fly on to the lower branches of trees (again, the dog likes to chase them), but was a little surprised one made it to the roof. Maybe the reason it just kind of wandered around up there for a while was that it was apprehensive about getting back down.
