There were always snapping turtles in the pond and nearby swamps at the end of the street where I grew up in Massachusetts. I grew up hanging around that pond and catching things, forever in fear through that some snapping turtle would sneak up and bite my ankles while I was wading around catching the far meeker painted turtles, frogs, etc. I'd see them just under the surface or, like you, one the banks laying eggs.

Sometimes the snappers would be crossing the road at night while my parents were driving and they'd slow down and go around them. Sometimes the snappers weren't so lucky and would end up dead.

There were also some people who would go snapper hunting with spears. I met a man from my church who told me he liked to go on the Shawsheen River in his canoe and spear snappers. He'd make soup. This wasn't at all a hunting town (Andover!) so he was probably one of the few people doing this.

where i lived as a child in Southern NH, there would be a pond at the end of the street full of snapping turtles. they would casually walk up the road and my older brothers would always grab a few and keep them as "pets" for a few days befoe letting them go.

Lovely pics, just hope the baby turtles realise the road isn't the water : )
