More Frogs! (Because We Sure Do Love Our Frogs)

Nov 08, 2008 23:46

November has heralded its arrival in Brisbane with many humid days that end in dramatic thunderstorms. It's the traditional harbinger of summer here, and while us poor primates may be finding the weather oppresive, but it's heaven for frogs.

Oh yes, there are pictures. )

Me too. I gave serious consideration to becoming a herpetologist as a kid. Now I just get to take their photos.

How do you tell the males and females apart?

In most frog species the male is quite a bit smaller than the female. Not as bad a spiders, mind you, but it's still noticable. The frog in the above picture was about 12 - 15cm long. There was also no calling coming from that patch of the yard, and the male frogs were calling at that point from other bits of my yard. So on the strength of those two bits of evidence, I figured we were probably looking at a lady frog. Really, it's tough to be 100% certain, what with the internal reproductive organs, but I'm fairly confident.

So much froggy cuteness. I wish we had frogs here. You can hear them in parks sometimes, but I've never seen one in any yard of any house I've ever lived in. *sigh*

I'm kind of on the top of a hill, away from traffic, and my neighbours have a pool they've neglected so thoroughly that it's reverted to nature. There's a couple of species of common frogs breeding in it, so I'm very lucky in that regard.
