I think it's both. I mean, Connor's statement about monsters made her snap in that particular moment, but she was also ready to murder him in cold blood at the Grill to save Jeremy. She only failed because he was better trained. So I'd say she definitely killed to protect her brother, even though that wasn't her only motivation.
And I love how she then freaks out and feels bad and slips into denial about her control levels, because she was very much in control in that scene. And yes, that it was a neck snap and not feeding. I hope they make the breaking down about more than the kill as they more forward, and have it encompassing everything, the loss etc.
