Proving my point

Annnnnd... I just found case in point on my rant about lazy and cowardly religious folk: I have a devout LDSer arguing that while she may "disagree" with some parts of church policy, and vote against such things when they come up in civil law, she can't do anything to change church policy ( Read more... )

fauxgressives, oh those funny kristians

I don't get it. Let's say that I'm in a club. We'll call it the We Like Boobs club (who can argue with that sort of platform?).

So the WLB is great and I pay dues sometimes. I've been in it a really long time.

And then it comes out that many of the heads of hte WLB chapters have been molesting children. And not only that, but the home office knew about it and spent millions of dollars (a lot of that money mine since i pay dies) to cover it up.

No matter how much I like the central idea, I leave that organization as soon as possible. And what's more, I tell everyone I did it. "Hey, did you hear about WLB and those kids? To think I used to be a member! If you're still a member, you better get out, or they'll be using your money to bang kids!".

But that is not what happens. What happens is this.

"I know, that's awful about the kids. I still like boobs, though, so what can I do?"

I'll tell you what. You can like boobs on your own. And not give money to child molesters.

As someone who has left Mormonism, you need to understand a lot of things about it. First off, people who dissent against "church policy" are excommunicated for not "following the prophets". This has happened many many times--for instance with mormons who published unfavorable church history, or during the period of the ERA. A devout LDS member would quietly dissent, but not try and change church policy because it is near impossible--and they run the risk of being removed from the church for their disobedience, and then they would lose all their ordinances for salvation. A devout member would be scared of being banished to outer darkness and risking their salvation if they stood against the church leaders ( ... )
