Summary - You had always considered himself to be ordinary and average
Notes - set 2007, around the time of the formation of S.K.I.N.
You had never considered himself to be anything special.
His university grades were good… but so many students were better.
He could play guitar… but there were so many guitarists better than him.
He’d been told he was cute… but that there were cuter guys.
If asked, You would place himself firmly in the ‘ordinary and average’ category of people. Maybe, if he was feeling good about himself that day he’d place himself at the top end of that category, but it would always be there.
Mr. Ordinary and Average. That was You.
You had a strong suspicion that if you asked his broad circle of friends or his family that they would place him in the same category. Good ole dependable You. Never excelling… but never failing either.
But then, You had met Satoru, a man so far away from ordinary and average that You doubted those words even existed in Satoru’s vocabulary. Satoru excelled in everything he attempted and instantly charmed everyone around him.
Mr. Extraordinary and Perfect. That was Satoru.
For reasons that You knew he’d never understand, he’d become friends with Satoru. The best of friends. Satoru would ignore all of those beautiful, intelligent and talented people that seemed to flock around him in favour of You and You could not understand why.
Of course, the day had come when Satoru had left You in search of other extraordinary and perfect people and when You had first seen Satoru, Gackt, on national television, barely recognisable under the thick make up and fancy clothes, You knew that Gackt had found his equals. Sure, You would never have considered joining a band like Malice Mizer but there was a talent and creativity there that was tailor made for Satoru.
You had watched as Gackt had soared, each phone call from the man a bigger surprise than the last. Gackt still remembered him, still called him and still considered the ordinary You a friend despite the extraordinary people that surrounded him. You couldn’t understand why Gackt still called and ignored the beating of his heart whenever he heard that familiar voice on the end of the phone line. You listened as Gackt told him stories that suggested that maybe, the extraordinary people weren’t all that extraordinary after all and smiled bitterly at the stories that suggested they were.
It took only a few short years before those extraordinary people lost their shine and their senses and left Gackt, just like Gackt had done to You. You had expected many things from Gackt after that. Continuing his career and to taking off to LA seemed a reasonable thing for Gackt to do, but You had never expected that Gackt would ask him to come along for the ride.
Again, You was left wondering why Mr. Perfect wanted him, Mr. Average, by his side when he could have picked a guitarist so much better but he’d agreed and mentally packed his bags before Gackt had even finished asking him.
As the years had passed, Gackt became more extraordinary and perfect in You’s eyes whereas You thought that he had become so firmly rooted in the average category that nothing would ever move him. Together, they’d become something amazing and You considered each day a blessing… whilst waiting for the day that Gackt traded him in for someone more suitable.
When that day came, You faced it with resignation and sorrow.
“…and the guitarists will be Sugizo and Miyavi,” Gackt said, his smile wider than You could ever remember seeing it.
You cleared his throat. “Good choices.”
“Yeah,” Gackt said, “they are both amazing guitarists. Extraordinary talents. They’ll be perfect for the band.”
Extraordinary… perfect… You’s heart sank.
“So it’ll be the show in America and an album?” You asked. It was remarkably easy to fake interest and enthusiasm.
Gackt nodded. “Yes, I think we’ll be very busy with this project for a long time. You’re going to get a long break from me and can live an ordinary and average life for a change,” Gackt chuckled.
Ordinary… average… You was screaming inside.
“It’ll be a nice break,” You said with false cheer before adding, “if you come back to JOB.”
Gackt looked at him with confused eyes. “If I come back? Why wouldn’t I?”
“Why would you?” You asked. “Sugizo and Miyavi are amazing guitarists, you said so yourself.”
“Yeah, they are,” Gackt agreed, “but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stay with them forever.”
“I would,” You stated, “they can offer more to a band than I can.”
“They probably can,” Gackt agreed, “but they can’t offer more to me than you do.”
“I don’t understand,” You said and truly, he didn’t.
Gackt smiled sweetly. “It’s extraordinary how well we work together. We’re a perfect fit, You. We always have been.”
Extraordinary…. perfect… You had no words.
Gackt seemed to sense this. “I guess I never really tell you these kind of things, do I? There is nobody in this world I’d rather have by my side than you, You-kun. Nobody matches up to you. You’re the most extraordinary and perfect person I’ve ever met. I feel so ordinary and average when I’m stood next to you.”
You didn’t know what to say. All of his thoughts were a jumbled mess so he said the only thought that was clear enough for him to speak. “You couldn’t be ordinary if you tried.”
Gackt laughed. “I’ve always considered myself to be distinctly ordinary and average. That’s why I work so hard.” Gackt’s voice softened and a nervousness crept into it that You hadn’t heard for a long, long time. “I want to be as perfect as you.”
You kissed him then, the kiss nothing more than an ordinary and hesitant soft press of lips against lips but still, so much more perfect than any kiss Gackt had ever received before.
When Gackt kissed him back, his hands coming to frame You’s face with a gentleness You had never felt from Gackt, You felt, for the first time in his life, both extraordinary and perfect.
