Summary - You needs some time to readjust
It was strange.
It seemed like years since he had last stayed in a hotel room on his own. He couldn’t remember how he occupied his time without someone to speak with or how he kept himself warm at night without someone to cuddle up with. He had vague memories of switching on the television that he never watched even at home or turning down the air conditioning that he couldn’t remember how to operate but both actions seemed like remnants of a past life.
There were, however, stranger experiences than that.
It may have seemed like years since he’d last stayed alone but it felt like a lifetime since he’d had someone there. If he concentrated, really concentrated hard so that his eyes closed and all of his attention was focused on poking his brain and sifting through the gaps caused by far too many drunken drinking contests with him, he could catch a glimpse of a feeling and a fragment of a memory that warmed his blood and reminded him that he’d once shared his hotel room in the same way he’d shared his life.
But all too quickly it was gone.
Everything had changed so suddenly - like ripping off a band aid only without the irritating but strangely satisfying tingle it left behind. One night there had been two toothbrushes in the bathroom. The next night there had been one.
You knew that no matter how much effort was exerted on something it still always came to an end. Friendships end. Careers end. Relationships end.
But damn, he still hadn’t seen it coming.
