Summary - Chacha reminds Gackt of how good a friend he really is

“Gakkun, can I speak with you?”

It was a politely worded request but one that was given in that tone of voice that meant that there was no room for arguments. Chacha was an expert at that tone of voice.

Gackt said his farewells to the crew who had helped with that day’s rehearsal as they left, smiled at Chirolyn and Junji and waved away the puzzled look on You’s face as he seated himself on one of the soft couches that lined the far wall of the rehearsal room. Chacha took the seat next to him and they were soon alone.

“Was there something wrong with my vocals?” Gackt asked. “Or is it those changes I requested? I know that things didn’t sound quite as good today but once we’re all more familiar with the new arrangements it’ll sound great.”

“No, no, no problems with any of that,” Chacha answered. “We have plenty of time to pull it all together before the tour starts.”

“So why…”

“How long have I known you, Gakkun?” Chacha asked. “Ten years? Eleven years? We’ve become more than colleagues in that time haven’t we?”

Gackt nodded nervously. He had no idea what Chacha wanted to talk about. “I consider you one of my closest friends, Cha.”

“Good,” Chacha said with a smile. “You’re one of my best friends too.”

“I’m glad to hear that,” Gackt said. What was this all about?

“Close friends have certain duties towards each other. They should be supportive, kind, willing to listen, able to keep a secret…”

“Look, Chacha, I have somewhere I need to…”

“..and able to tell their friends when they’re being a complete ass.”

Gackt paused, his protests of being late for his next appointment stolen from his tongue by Chacha’s words. “What?”

“You’re an ass, Gakkun.”

Gackt was aware that his mouth was hanging open in shock but he was too surprised at Chacha’s words to care. He had always been proud of the open and honest relationship he had with those closest to him but there was such a thing as being too open and honest…

“Um, what?” Gackt repeated. “Why am I an ass? What have I done?”

Chacha resisted the urge to give Gackt the full list of reasons (after all, he had a date in two hours time) and instead settled for discussing the main issue at hand. “It’s not what you’ve done, Gakkun. More what you haven’t done.”

Gackt shook his head. “Now you really aren’t making any sense. Have all the hair products reached your brain at last?”

“I think you’re more at risk of that than me, dear,” Chacha said, “but no, I know exactly what I’m talking about.”

“Are you going to explain? I do have an interview…”

“This is more important than an interview,” Chacha interrupted. “This is about You.”

You? Gackt was even more puzzled than before. As far as he was aware, You was fine and his usual sunny and cheery self. As always, the guitarist had been the driving force of the rehearsals with his seemingly endless enthusiasm and when Gackt had spoken to him earlier over a cup of coffee, You had been full of joy over his new camera.

“What about You? And why am I an ass?” Gackt thought that was an important question that shouldn’t be ignored.

“You’re an ass, because you don’t realise what is right in front of you.”

“I don’t understand.”

“No, you never have,” Chacha sighed. “You is madly, deeply and utterly head over heels in love with you, Gakkun, and he has been since the day I met him.”

Gackt blinked. “No….”

“Yes….” Chacha mocked. “You haven’t seen the pain in his eyes, Gakkun whenever you flaunt your latest fling in front of him. You’ve always been too blind to see it and too blind to see him.”

“I had no idea I was hurting him like that,” Gackt said sadly.

“I know it was inadvertent, but you were hurting him, Gakkun. I’m not going to ask you to stop seeing other people, but be a little more sensitive to You’s feelings,” Chacha said before adding, “that is, if your feelings aren’t the same.”

Chacha offered Gackt a reassuring smile and was surprised to see Gackt jump to his feet. “I need to go, Cha,” Gackt said, “I need to speak to You.”

“What are you going to say to him?” Chacha asked nervously. “Don’t tell him I told you about this!”

Gackt already had the door open and one foot in the corridor before he replied. “I’m not sure what I’m going to say yet,” he replied, “but I do know that I’m not going to give you the chance to call me an ass anymore.”

With those parting words Gackt was gone and running down the corridors to find You.

Chacha still sat on the couch, his mind spinning with worry and hope over what Gackt was going to say to You. He looked at the open doorway through which Gackt had just exited and quietly said “Gakkun, you’re still an ass.”
