Well, there are a handful of movies you could use.
For example, Benedicts rather small roles in "Three Lions" and "The Whistleblower" might go well with his status as an unknown actor in your story.
And there is of course the 4-parter "To the Ends of Earth", in which he plays a character that is quite different from Sherlock, I'd say. John might be surprised about what side of his flatmate he sees there.
I also liked "The Last Enemy", although the story was rather mean. And there is of course the movie "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy".
Just to name a few :)
