Well, you totally surprised me with the Douglas/Martin switch. I'm so used to Martin being the whump-magnet of the fandom...

:-)
Of course Douglas is an ex-alcoholic middle-aged man whose wife has just left him and whose career is going backwards, with no obvious outlet to talk about any of these things and an obsession with maintaining his own image as life and soul of the party. He must, statistically speaking, be way more likely to have mental health problems than Martin and be way less likely to seek help.

Oh, this is lovely. Very poignant indeed. And we all know who Martin's "friend" is, who is now grateful that someone stopped for him... Well done.

Ahhh, someone went there with Douglas! Absolutely perfect - Douglas has a lot going on under the surface that he clearly represses to an unhealthy degree, so it's about time someone whumped him a bit. This is gorgeous (probably not the right word, but yeah) and you've really caught that sense of hopeless blankness.

I'm glad that it's not all okay at the end, that there's a long, difficult road ahead. But yay for Martin - he's always seemed pretty understanding of emotions and things.

In short - love this reversal. Spiffing stuff :D

How sad and beautiful at the same time! I loved how you kept us in the dark about who it was until the very end - and I loved it was Douglas. It is really fitting, if you think about it. I loved how Martin is "always looking out, just in case" and how you gave an kind of relieving ending without it being too much of a happy end, but rather realistic.
Well done! :-)
