There's a big store called Michael Levine's which has the biggest and most organized selection of fabrics in the FD, IMO! But just by walking around there and poking into stores you'll find a lot of stuff.
Whenever I go with someone, we always park in a parking structure. You have to walk a little bit to get to the fabric stores but it's not too bad!
I never pay attention to street names when I walk around there so I can't really direct you! D: 6th street is ringing a bell but that's probably not helpful at all ><; I think if you are by yourself out during the daytime, it should be okay? There's usually lots of people around, though I've only been there on weekends so that's probably why...
Awesome! Thanks for the info Amy.. I'm totally ok with walking from a parking structure. Michael Levine.. I'll try and remember that, Caitlin says it's on Maple.. And I would definitely be going during the shiny day light hours.
The Fashion district is mostly a square between 7th and Olympic, Figueroa and St. Pedro, and when we go we usually park in a lot (they're usually like 4 or 5 bucks) on 7th, sort of on the outskirts and walk into it, since there's not really parking inside. like Amy said, Michael Levine's is the most organized and biggest store there, it's on Maple street. I'm not sure if any stores sell shower curtain fabric through. That's kind of a specific plastic material, unless you're looking for cloth?
Most of these places are completely packed during the daytime, especially a weekend, so going alone isn't much of a safety problem unless you're going into creepy alleys or something. I can't remember if I've actually been through Santee Alley though.
Sweet thanks! Perhaps I'll stop in tomorrow on my way back to riverside. I actually have the plastic "keep water from hitting the floor" curtian already and was looking more for the decorative fun fabric to hang outside the tub and hide it's relative uglyness.
Did some random journal-hopping and ended up here (why haven't I added you??). I don't know if you've gone already, but the structure I usually park in is on 7th and Los Angeles. You then have to walk four blocks maybe down Los Angeles until you hit 9th and turn left. You'll be able to see the fabric stores (and some rug stores) a block down. That intersection is the main 4 corners I usually work off of.
Santee Alley: Santee St. is actually a block over from Los Angeles, but the Alley itself is all the way down at 15th St. from what I remember. If you keep walking down Santee you eventually hit it - there's a big sign over the Alley and the road sort of dead-ends at it. It's even more crowded there than in the FD proper. It's also more clothing, bootleg dvds, merchandise oriented and not fabric. I've been alone once and kept a tight grip on my purse the whole time just in case (it's close quarters in there). Didn't have a problem, but I also didn't stop to check many things out.

I'll aim for a 7th street parking garage.
