You do have one typo -- "...I don't know if tigers would do this or live in palces where there are tall cliffs and such..." -- the L in "places" has traded spots with A.
The story is great, and fits right into your point. And I love the part about the tiger, which might be another kind of wild animal, and all the hyphens -- it takes an overheard and repeated tale and really makes it your own. :)
And *hugs* for the struggle; that really is a hard choice to make.

I don't recall hearing it at all before, but that's not terribly surprising -- my memory is poor enough that I frequently don't remember writing the things I find in my writing folder, and the only stuff that goes in there is the things I write. But I like the sense of you making it your own all the same. :)
