I'm not sure yet... Not sure where 6th grade lies... I remember what I read -sort of but who knows with kids these days. the stuff they make them do is scary sometimes! Anyway, I know they read Where the Red Fern Grows in class. He tried reading Spiderwick Chronicles and didn't like it... but I don't know how far he got or how well he read it... I'll take anything really. I think it's going to be tough either way to find something he'll like but it'll also be tough to find something in the library system here. It kinda sucks...

OMG! My Side of the Mountain! I totally remember reading that book for fun (mostly because my teacher was trying to convince me to read stuff OTHER than Nancy Drew). I don't think I know anyone else who's read that... That is a good idea and it is kind of interesting because it plays with most kid's fantasies of living on their own and out in the wild and what not...

I would recommend 'Coraline' or 'The Graveyard Book' by Neil Gaiman. They are scary spooky things he might like.

You know I forgot to ask if he liked Scary/Spooky. Saw a bunch of stuff in the library like that but wasn't sure if he would put is as magic or fantasy and wouldn't enjoy it. I'll definitely look into it though - thanks!

The "Abarat" books I told you about are kind of fantasy, but they are also adventure (they also have a girl as the main character, so I don't know how he'd feel about that).
"The White Mountains" by John Christopher is great, and it's adventure/sci-fi, AND it's the first of a trilogy, so if he likes it there are instantly two more to read.
I'll keep thinking...

I don't know how he'll feel about having a girl for the protagonist either but maybe the art will be interesting to him since he wants to be an artist when he grows up.

And I'll definitely look into White Mountains because books in a series would be great so he has something to keep reading if it does hook him in. My biggest problem will be finding it in the Sac library system =P

If he likes Star Wars I say skip the YA and just give him some of the early novels they put out. I'd particularly recommend the Timothy Zahn series that starts with "Heir to the Empire." They're as close as you can get to ep 4-6 in a book form. I actually read this in 6th grade though I was already a voracious reader at the time. Besides, I think there's something to be said in the challenge method of teaching. Give him a book that isn't catered to his age/grade and tell him to go for it.

He should read the young jedi knights ones! They're pretty decent and def. 6th grade reader level.

I was definitely thinking about getting the Star Wars books but there are SO many so thanks for narrowing it down for me!

Animorphs! they're easy reads, and there are like 60 of them. Plus! They have some "big" words, they teach animal biology and are action packed, deal with some adult themes (like war, not like sex) so they don't make the kid feel patronized.

Oh, and Enders Game. Definitely.

What about Brian Jacques? It's kinda fantasy, but it's also action filled?

LOL I toootally remember Animorphs! i didn't read them but I always saw them... I didn't really know what they were about but I think I might try it if I see it in the library. And yes I was thinking Enders Game but quite frankly I don't knw if he's at that level. And he needs to read it fairly quickly and it might be too long for him... Makes me sad - such a good book. Hopefully down the line...

If he's not at the level of Enders Game, then Definitely give Animorphs a try. I remember reading them in sixth grade, and they only took around 30 minutes each to read. But I read a lot.

Then maybe he can level up to enders game?
