Again, another great summary. I just have a few comments/clarifications.

Eric really does like a lot of Harry Turtledove's stuff. However, Eric agrees with Jay that the alternative history Civil War series was, as you say above, churned out just to get money to put his daughters through school. I like Turtledove's stuff despite the dull prose (though I admit I've never read the Civil War series).

On my comments about George R.R. Martin, that should have read "protagonists," because he's killed off more than one leading character that I'd come to like. It was the cumulative effect that disgusted me. I probably would still be reading him if he'd only done it once or twice.
