I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time. It's an Experience with capital E for any European. I haven't been to the places you mentioned, but I spent a year in Michigan as an exchange student for my senior year of high school and it was definitely one of the biggest adventures of my life so far. America is so... colourful. And big. And fascinating.

Plus, the conference sounds really cool.

Oh, I'm sure I'll have a fantastic time. I'm vaguely intimidated by the conference because it's bigger than anything I've ever been to, but I'm sure it'll be great.

GAH Boston! I'm jealous, and I'm an American. I've been to Boston exactly once and didn't get to see or do anything. My mother's family is from nearby Salem (yes, that Salem), and we were in town for my grandmother's funeral so I didn't get to see anything there, either.

You seriously could spend two weeks just in Massachusetts alone. But I understand wanting to see more than that. :)

Anyway, I'm near DC, so unless you're going to be in that area during the tail end of your trip I guess no meet up. However, if you decide you want a tour of the nation's capital and don't mind a young child (or possibly two children, depends if my oldest will be in camp that day or not) tagging along, I'd be happy to play tour guide.

I might even find a babysitter, come to think of it. I've been wanting to take a tour of the White House and the Capitol myself and they're too young to bring along.

Actually, there's a good chance that I may have an event to attend in DC as well. I'd love a tour guide! With or without the kids, I don't mind them. The White House and the Capitol sound awesome.

I'll let you know as soon as the itinerary is definite (could take a week or two). The north-east definitely has enough to keep me happily occupied, and I hope I can spend some more time there, but a bunch of people I want to meet are on the west coast. Hence the cross-country.
