Sometime about 0440 Sunday morning, my main server, babylon4, went down hard and fast.  I still haven't been able to reconstruct a single thing about what actually happened, but it left the machine down, with the boot archive corrupt and the boot blocks completely gone.  The last thing logged before it went down - about half an hour before - was ( Read more... )

My brother was talking about his design lab for his EE. They had run simulations for their circuit many times, but when they breadboarded the thing together, their transistor turned into an LED... for about three seconds. Hardware is supposed to Just Work Dammit (tm)! (And, preferably, not be susceptible to idiot tinkering (including my own)). Unfortunately, life is what we make of it, not what we want of it. Congratulations on getting it up and going again. I wonder what live wire got hit to sent the box OS into a tailspin like that.
