This topic may make sense to many of you and seem like it's a natural that needs little help to achieve. We have mentioned racism here before, so apparently many do realize that it may not be something that will happen without some work. I think it's a very important issue and I want to point you to some resources.
First, for those who haven't been involved in anti-racism before, the term "white" is as labeled by government statistics and does NOT mean "white supremacy" - just the opposite. To be white often means to not think of one's color or perceived color and ethical background. To talk about racism, it helps to learn about whiteness in our culture. This is especially true in the United States, but for any country that is becoming multi-cultural and in this world-wide environment where we "meet" people of different cultures, it can be a useful study.
For primarily North Americans (US & Canada):
WACAN (White Anti-racist Community Action Network) a forum and news
Their parent organization has a good site with many links.:
The Center for the Study of White American Culture, including links for Australia & UK under "Academic studies of whiteness and white culture" and other pages.
For UU's the
White Allies group is just forming to support
DRUUMM (Diverse & Revolutionary Unitarian Universalist Multicultural Ministries). There's also an
anti-racism email list.
OK, this may seem like taking ourselves too seriously, but we get to meet a variety of great people and feel open to talk about things that are otherwise suspect of being racist due to political correctness.
Here's a web page I created with resources that my congregation has used. I will be adding to it, of course.
