I've just signed up for Netflix (you know you want to be my friend- I just rated Captain Ron 4-stars!- I'm going to have a 3% compatibility rating with Christine and Jpatt) and because everyone needs goals aside from their academic and career goals, I've decided to work my way down the AFI's 100 Years. . .100 Movies of the 100 best American movies ( Read more... )

you can't even rent Birth of a Nation anymore. It's like... outlawed I think? Or highly restricted bc, believe it or not, Klan members were using it to further their cause.

I think I've seen about 30? I'm bothered by some of AFI's picks. For exmaple, I had to watch Bringing Up Baby for a film class. Katharine Hepburn cares for a "tame" leopard named Baby. Then there's a mix-up and somehow they get a hold of a wild leopard (not Baby) and have to get the real Baby back. It is very, uh, eye-roll inducing. BUT look at this:
In 1990, Bringing Up Baby was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant", the second year that the registry started preserving films. Entertainment Weekly voted the film number twenty-four on its list of the greatest films. In 2000, readers of Total Film magazine voted it the forty-seventh greatest comedy film of all time. It is also consistently on the Internet Movie Database's list of top 250 films ( ... )

I just quizzed Michael on this list thinking to myself, "Hey he likes a lot of these movies." He has seen 61 without being aware there was a list. Now, he is feeling even more smug and superior than usual.

No wonder he gets annoyed when I want to rent "The Labyrinth" or Faerie Tale Theater.

PS: I personally love Casablanca and Gone with the Wind. Or maybe that's my ovaries talking.

By the way, that post was from your wife in case you were consternated and could not use your analytical skills to figure it out.

After I watch this entire list I will call Michael on your phone and we can talk for 45 minutes about how we are awesome and have seen all of these movies. And then I'll immediately start renting things like Weekend at Bernie's.

Casablanca and The Godfather both come today!
