I understand how you feel - I miss my father a lot, but we had a lot of difficulties because he had undiagnosed bi-polar and was frequently unpredictable. One day he was nice and everything was happy, and the next he was mean and unapproachable - and we couldn't figure out what caused it or which dad he would be that day.

Years later he was diagnosed and went to therapy and got medication, so we at least had an opportunity to bond in his later years and work through some of that.

I think it is ok to love someone and miss the good times with them even when their issues caused some of yours. It makes perfect sense to me.

Thanks:-) It is nice to hear your experience. My brother and I are both bipolar (but treated) and we suspect my father was, as well. We have a lot of bipolar relatives on my father's side.

i feel you. my father was a jackass, gave me ptsd too, but i do miss him at times and the few good times we had together were really good!

i think its really great you are able to realize that he does love you and that hes ill. that takes a lot of courage. and its giving you YOUR power back
