“Don’t be afraid...”
The voice was calm, cold. Condescending. Was he expecting fear? Probably...
“I’m not afraid of you.”
“Hn.”
A blade struck through his stomach and he could feel his own stomach and innards tumbling down, over his bound legs and splashing into the water that replaced the ground.
Kisame did not black out. He was in pain and he was tired... But he would not give in.
---
Eyes opened slowly. Everything was dull, but it came into focus soon enough. Confusion swam over his mind, when did he pass out? In this realm, maybe he didn’t at all...
“Don’t be afraid...”
“I’m not afraid of you.”
Red eyes narrowed, eight of them. A blade ran through his stomach. Well, at least he was patched up again... Another sliced through his side, skewering his both kidneys in one stab. The last two jammed into his shoulders, making the joints pop apart. Kisame felt sick, blood dripped from his bottom lip. He bit down to keep from yelling.
No obscenities, he had to stay polite...
He sighed, blood flecking over those red eyes, and making the other man blink. He smiled as his vision tunneled, at least he had done that much.
---
Kisame woke to searing pain in his arms, and winced before he even opened his eyes.
“Don’t be afraid...”
He opened his eyes, looking at his arms. Stakes of wood shout out from every joint. Elbow, shoulders, his wrists and hands were mutilated beyond recognition.
“I’m not afraid.”
He looked back and closed his eyes. He wanted to rest now...
---
It went on like that for a while. The pain all started to throb together. Kisame forgot where he was, who he was, at some points.
He was always told not to be afraid.
Even when he was lost and confused he replied that he wasn’t.
And then, at one point, he opened his eyes and his arms were at his side, not bound to the crucifix. The pain was gone, but he was still so tired...
“Are you afraid?”
He looked up, his newly assigned partner looking back at him, eyes turning black.
“...I never was.”
Itachi’s eyebrows barely rose, and Kisame didn’t notice it. He was tired... So tired... But he wouldn’t give in.
