Top Gear and us lazy, flatulent Mexicans

Feb 02, 2011 16:19

OK, I generally don't complain about this kind of thing because I found it's pointless, a bit anal, and not to mention, we Mexicans make jokes about infanticides and rapists... but, as engelen said on twitter, that was uncalled for. :/

Yes, sadly that's the Mexican stereotype we haven't cared enough to get rid off, but it's an stereotype, it's ignorant, ( Read more... )

my dear country, random, meh

Oh well... stereotypes... what can I say. I know I am guilty of letting them out of my mouth from time to time too. But they're mostly funny and harmless and good-hearted.

They shouldn't use them on telly though. Especially not such offensive ones. There's a difference between harmless joke and racism and those people should think twice before they say something on telly where everyone can hear it.
Don't take it bad, hun, it's not worth it.
xx

btw, they say we're the lazy ones too! That's common stereotype, innit? Who's spreading it? China?

I agree that it's fine if all we know about a country is an stereotype, because really, we can't all be erudite and travel the world and thus challenge our prejudices of a culture/country, but like you said, there's a difference between making a harmless joke based on a stereotype and... well, this ( ... )

I love Mexican food! You can make a lot of veggie stuff with Mexican cuisine.

Come visit me and I'll cook for you! Or better yet: I'll make my mum cook for you. XD I can only make Maruchan instant noodles, and that's not very Mexican. :P

Aw, thank you. ♥ I do love our food. :) And I confess myself ignorant of the British cuisine. :P

I think I might be reading too much into it, but I can't help but feeling humiliated, in a way. It took me back to the 19th Century! It was as if they were saying, "Listen, you lazy, flatulent, fat fuckers, you don't meet our standards, you can't possibly make a good car like the Germans, you can't even cook, because you ain't one of us." Something like that. As if they were saying we're second class human/citizens, all of us Mexican. :/ But it might have a lot more to do with the stuff I've been studying in school than with what they said. *shrugs*

I consider myself a fan of those guys, their show is really good. However they truly crossed the line, stereotypes exist everywhere but somehow it looked like they hated mexicans :( Everything was 'ok' till last part, I think Hammond was a little bit too much, James clearly never ever tasted the glourious mexican food, and well, Clarckson was just been idiotic. They do the same with everyone everywhere, would it be different if they where talking about some other country ._.?

Duuuude, you're so serious, you don't sound like yourself. XD

Anyway... I read somewhere that it was all a publicity stunt, and that the skit was even written (that explains how odd it seems... it flows too naturally). I don't know if that makes it worse or better. Meh. It's like you said, they crossed the line. It was a little bit too much, and well, they can't expect us to just shrug it off, not considering how the words they chose to say could easily be interpreted in a colonialist. :/
