Honestly, I wasn't paying that much attention to the latest reason people were being all odd and twitchy. I knew that something was up, but it could have been just me given that I seemed slightly more likely to say exactly what was on my mind. It was like I'd had no filter, no stop between my brain and my mouth ( Read more... )

"What?" He ducked his head out of the lab and then stepped all the way out a moment later when he caught a sight of her. This truth-telling thing was fantastic when it came to research, just say hypothesis aloud, and if it comes out you know you're on the right track.

"Meg? What's the matter?"

He shook his head slightly and he could feel himself trying not to say anything. Because it was altogether better to just keep quiet and weather Meg's freak-out that way rather than just getting involved.

Somehow, that wasn't going to fly today.

"Well, obviously they exist somewhere. Come on, Meg, we knew that we weren't the only us's in the universe, since at least the twins came."

Of course I know that. It's always been there, and I've always been waiting for the twins to come back, or a set of the twins and Charles and well, for something. I just need to know what happens. I want something solid.

God, I shouldn't be this upset. I shouldn't feel like I want to break something or cry. "I know. I just. God, would you stop being so reasonable? There's a future us out there and it's solid and quantifiable and it can call my mum and I can't and she can go walking in the twins' garden and have the best job and probably has children and is perfect and I'm not. I'm a...a joke."

"I'm being the only way I know how to be, Meg, so please don't tell me to be anything different," he shot back at her then shook his head for a moment before trying again.

"You're- you're-" He shook his head. "You're crazy Meg. That's a blockhead move. You want to get married, you want to have kids? Okay. Sure. Let's do it. Grab a veil. But don't try to convince yourself you're always the last damn kid getting picked for the team on the playground."

I'm fine with being the crazy one, heck, I'm pretty damn good at it, if I think about it for more than thirty seconds, but that hurts. In fact it hurts so much it makes me angry. It makes me want to scream and cry and just want my brothers.

"Gah, I hate you Calvin O'Keefe. You know that's not what I said at all." I'm still hold that stupid as all hell piece of paper that I think I hate more in one hand, but I'm so mad I can hardly think, so I do what I just have to. I haul off and slug him. "Go die. Take your...whatever and shove it where the sun don't shine."

"That's exactly what you said, that's your big-" He had been talking loudly, almost shouting, trying to talk over her b ut stopped short when there was suddenly a fist on his mouth.

He stopped short and just looked at her as his hand came up to touch the sore spot where one of his teeth had bit through his bottom lip. Years, he'd known her now, and this was the firs time Meg Murry had actually slugged him.

His mouth twisted but then he just shook his head and glared at her before turning on his heel. "Fine. Fine, h ave it your way."

I don't even know what's going on any more. All I know is that I have a bit of a headache and I'm breathing so hard through my nose I kind of resemble a bull. This sort of thing hasn't really happened to me since I was fourteen and it never happened with Cal.

It's something else. "Fine," I shout after him. "I will!"

"And don't you dare try to storm off like last time!" He shouted back at her. "You stay there and I'll...go somewhere else!"

Not that he really wanted to stay away from the house. Calvin liked his house, he liked everything about it. But by now taking care of her was knee-jerk even if she was being a pill.
