In Chrome, at least, stick your mouse over it, and it freezes, dropping the CPU usage to 0.

But yes, nasty. And, I'm willing to bet, not usable with certain varieties of disability (essentially: when did reading news articles become a twitch-game?)

Firefox 3 here. It's defiantely adding more work to my CPUs, but nowhere near 90%. More like 10ish, but I have a pretty powerful computer.

Mine is getting on a bit... but even so, it seems a bit poor for a piece of flummery like that to be so demanding.
