There's a difference between being a southerner and being from the south. For instance... Florida. You don't think about someone being a southerner when you think of Florida. You think about that as a southern state.
If South Jersey was its own state (which is should be), there would be a shit load of southerners in there. However, since it's an even Northerner mix in Jersey, it can't be a southerner state, only a southern state when it comes to northern-most states, but still a northern state when it comes to the Mason Dixon line.
