Come on, you sonofabitch. Be alive. This time. Don't let me be too late again.

A flash of something pale caught her eye, standing out against the darker expanse of the grass. She turned and headed that way, quickening her pace and then breaking into a run as the object resolved itself into a prone, cream-clad form sprawled face-down on the ground. "Cas? ...Castiel! Bobby, I found him! He's here!"
She skidded onto her knees beside her brother, her stomach lurching as she took in the tortured, unnatural angles of his limbs and the smears of blood drying in the grass. "Cas? Can you hear me? ...oh, god." His eyes were open, fixed, and clouded. He wasn't breathing. She pressed her shaking fingers into the pulse point under his jaw, and couldn't find a heartbeat. "Cas? Sweetheart..."
His skin felt as cold to the touch as her own.
"No. No, no, no, no, no, please, no..."

Goddamnit Cas. Not again.
"Anna." His hands closed gently around her shoulders, drawing her away from her frantic, and fruitless search for a pulse. "Anna, honey. Let him be."
It was no easier the second time, watching a man he'd come to consider family meet his end too goddamn early. His own voice grew rough with sorrow. This Cas had endured so much without complaint, remaining steadfast to all of his friends. Fucking pagan deities.
"Let him rest. He's earned his peace."

The son of a bitch hadn't even bothered to clean up after himself. His grace was splashed around so liberally he might as well have carved his initials on a tree and pissed against the trunk for good measure.
Balthazar was here. The moment she identified that distinctive signature, Anna went very, very still; a deceptive air of calm fell over her as she ruthlessly suppressed her rage and grief. The time for falling apart would come later, in private. After she'd dealt with the business at hand ( ... )
