With the basics of shelter established in one of the houses possessed of power and running water, John Marcone's thoughts had turned now to the equation of knowledge and power, and the need to aquire some knowledge as a result.
Libraries traditionally being good places for such endeavours, he turned up in a freshly pressed suit, if less the tie, and paused by Marian's table to study the title of one of her stack.
"Not terribly," Marian replied, glancing up from her papers with a sharpness that is the only outward indication of surprise. "Simply a broad one. You're one of the newcomers, aren't you?"
"The phrase 'fresh off the boat' would apply here more than usual," Marcone agreed, his own expression dryly neutral as a scarred-knuckled hand reached over to brush the cover of one book.
"A library seemed like a good place to get a little background on the situation."
A flicker of wry humour chases across Marian's face at that choice of phrasing, there and gone in an instant. Whatever the joke might be, she leaves it unexplained, opting instead for, "Less so than you might think. There is any book here that you could possibly imagine - except for those dealing with the particulars of this place, its rulers, or the culture credited with both."
"And here I thought I was the only one who built a wall around my study carrel." Sam has a few books in hand himself, but there wasn't anything particularly pressing that he needed to get back to. His research so far had turned up bupkis, so he had the time to say hi.
Marian startled at the unfamiliar voice, fumbling briefly to keep her pen from skittering off the edge of the table before she shifted to look up. "Oh. I find a little light architecture makes me less likely to scatter things everywhere." She glanced sidelong at the table and her notes, which were, in fact, looking a bit scattered. "...Mostly."
Sam couldn't help but grin at that. "Personally, I just like having everything in quick reach." And it made for a good hiding place for a few books that they absolutely didn't want other people to get hold of. "Sorry for surprising you, though."
Marian shook her head slightly in response to the apology. "I shouldn't have let myself get caught up enough not to notice you approaching. So I should probably be glad to be surprised by a human rather than whichever disaster we're going to have set on us next."
Marian started a little, looking up at the sound. She smiled slightly as the surprise faded into recognition. "Hey," she replied. "Ah - how are you doing?"
"Thank you," Marian said as she reached over to take the offered cup.
"I'm well enough. Considering a few things in light of recent events that may not make me many friends, but that's something I'll just have to live with."

"Varied topics," he opined.

Pausing away at a distance, Harry hesitated before clearing his trhoat.
"I know I promised you dinner, but consider this a raincheck."
