The chasm was, to say the least, unsettling but that was nothing new to the Underworld. Everything was unsettling somehow. He arrived at the chasm, landing with a whoosh of displaced air, and looked around. He would have to see about getting those sigils taken off of Dean's ribs -- and follow through on that thought this time. Dean was off to the side, on the other side of the chasm; Castiel took to flight again and landed some feet behind the man.

And then frowned at the way Dean was looking at the chasm. "If you are thinking of going down there, don't."

If Dean was capable of bellowing curses that loudly, than it must be a superficial wound. Even so, Castiel glanced at him as he shoved the hound he'd stabbed aside. Ah. Yes. He was right. Superficial, but certainly painful. Dean's shot went wide; Castiel stepped up beside him, risking an unprotected back.

"There," he said, pointing slightly to the left of where Dean had shot. "Circling left."

And then he could offer no more guidance; a hound's presence 'pinged' him just before he heard it barreling toward them both.

Superficial or not it hurt like well, hell and brought back memories Dean Winchester would have rather left buried.

"Got it" He fired the first shot did nothing but kick up dirt as the hell hound was ready for him. When Cas got distracted by that second one Dean didn't even notice because the first one pounced him then.

"Crap!" The hunter fell to the ground with a hard thud as claws sunk in to his shoulders. He didn't know how he managed it but Dean wedged his gun in there and blew the hell hounds brains out through it's chin. Rolling and scrambling to his feet as he pushed the weight off him, turning to see if Cas was alright.

A hellhound would charge and worry at its prey until there was nothing left; Castiel had no reason to think this one would think any differently. But occasionally, one came across a hound that was more intelligent than than the average. An Alpha, so to speak. Castiel let it charge him; all of his attention was caught up in spinning to meet the charge head-on.

Like the last hound, he merely waited for it to get close enough to almost impale itself on Castiel's dagger. It took minimal effort on Castiel's part and the hounds were rarely smart enough to evade.

This one was, and Castiel was very nearly bitten for his trouble. The hound twisted, almost doubling back on itself in the moment it leaped -- and Castiel found himself scrambling just to stay upright as the hound barreled into his knees, instead of leaping as he'd been expecting. Upright wasn't possible, but Castiel managed regain his balance on one knee, empty palm slapping hellhound flesh. He might not be able to exorcise demons anymore, but he could still burn a hellhound ( ... )

"Dude.." Dean just stared as Cas seared that hell hound, that was pretty impressive. But the hunter also had the worried thought that it was possible he shouldn't be using too much of that angelic power right now.

He cracked a grin any way "Nice one." as he spoke, Dean stepped away from the chasm and turned to look at it "We got a big problem, things are gonna keep crawlin' out there, we can't stand here day and night killin' 'em."

It sucked to say it, but it was the honest truth and if Djinn and hell hounds were crawling out, it was possible some of the worse supernatural pieces of crap that he had dealt with in his life could come crawling out.

"Must be the damn bowels of hell or somethin' down there."

It was true that Castiel had been keeping a tight rein on angelic power in the last few weeks -- months even, if one was to get technical -- but there were times when it was simply needed. Cut off from Heaven and slowly bleeding Grace, Castiel was very careful about how much he used and when, if only because he didn't want to somehow not have enough power when it was desperately needed.

The hellhound, though, was... asking for it. (That was the phrase, wasn't it?) The thing had tried to bring him to the ground and Castiel was not one to idly stand by and let it.

He gave Dean a withering look. They were in Hell -- or a version thereof. Of course the pit reached into the bowels of hell. "We can't stand here, but we can watch over the town."

Dean just cocked his head to the side at that withering look and gave the angel his normal cocky smirk. Yes, they were in hell, but hey, with this place that thing could have went any where, but with what was coming out of it, Dean assumed and therefore he made his comment. Plus, some times, he just had a habit of stating the obvious.

"Guess you're right. Too bad we can't find a way to close the son of a bitch up."

He turned then, he needed to get back home and change his pants, not to mention, he might not show it outwardly, but fighting hellhounds had left Dean a little shaken.

"Bastard ruined my pants."

"That would be simplest," Castiel said, somewhat idly. Closing the chasm would be the best course of action, if it was possible. There was no way he could set his will and power against it and expect anything but failure.

He raised a hand, ready to take them both back to the house, but hesitated before actually laying his fingers on Dean's forehead. "Unless you'd rather walk back."

Dean was pretty sure that no matter who tried that hole in the ground wasn't going any where till one of the dicks in charge decided it should. Not having control or any course of action with which to take back control grated on Dean.

It was almost automatic to say yes, but concern for Cas caught Dean just in time and he shook his head "Nah, it's a scratch, I can walk." It wasn't far to the town house and with big bads crawling out of the chasm, Dean figured Cas needed all the juice he could get. So the hunter opted to walk home for that change of clothes and to patch up the wound on his leg.

Castiel let his hand drop, only half-shrugging at Dean's insistence that he walk. In truth, he was fairly certain part of that decision came out of concern for him, but he wasn't willing to force the issue. He was fine; he had plenty of "mojo" in reserve, even if the chasm started spitting monsters at them again.

Instead of arguing, Castiel fell in beside Dean, careful to keep senses extended toward the chasm, just in case they weren't quite done fighting creatures. "If this is a permanent fixture here, we may want to start thinking about patrolling the city. Not all its residents can defend themselves against such creatures."

It was, he didn't want Cas to get hurt because he had used some of that reserve to help him. Not unless it was necessary. He knew Cas could handle it, even knew he could handle more out of that chasm. But Dean refused to be the reason he suffered, even a slight loss of more of his angelic powers, because Cas had already given up more than enough because of him.

"Like the damn police, great. From hunter to security guard, I'm movin' up in the world." The hunter snorted "Well, we got me, you , Bobby, Jo, Ellen and Sammy. Should be able to do somethin' with that." He didn't mention his mom, he knew she wanted out of the life and truthfully, Dean wished he could make that happen for her.

Castiel may have argued that point for hours, had Dean said something. His power was there to use when needed and he'd take any drain on his resources if it meant protecting those he called friends. It wouldn't be pleasant, but he'd make the sacrifice without a second thought.

He snorted at Dean's assessment. "You'd still be hunting," he said mildly. Then he sighed. "There are others who can fight. If this chasm is spitting out creatures from our world, it stands to reason that it might also introduce creatures from others. We don't know how to fight those."

Then Cas should understand, Dean would rather suffer a walk on a hurt leg, than risk him, because Cas was beyond friends, he was family, no different then Bobby, Ellen or Jo. So this was one sacrifice Dean would never complain about making.

The hunter pursed his lips for a moment as he thought over what Cas had just said. "True." It would be hunting, just on a much larger scale.

"Could see about gettin' some people together, the ones who can fight and splittin' up in to shifts." Dean was uneasy at fighting with others, he had done so a few times since being here, but he never felt right with out the others at his back.

Castiel nodded, gladly foisting this particular project off on Dean. He wasn't the best choice when it came to speaking with people or organizing much of anything. He tended to be far too insular and practical, which could grate on nerves. (Not that Dean was any better, tending to rely on himself and himself only when problems arose.)

"There is no guarantee that this is permanent," Castiel said, not quite sure if he believed that or not. On one hand, monsters had come and gone before. On the other, he didn't have a lot of faith in good things happening in the Underworld. "It might be a good way to learn of others' abilities."

...Not that he wanted such a steep learning curve.

Dean was not much better, but he was more socially adept than Cas so handling people was a bit more his thing. Even if he didn't always handle them right, but he figured with the few people he knew now here, he could form up some kind of group or maybe get Sam or Bobby to help him organize. He seemed to be the unofficial leader of their group, but really Dean never felt much like one.

Half the time he was winging it and just doing what he could in the situation, he was just lucky that his instinct paid off more often than not. "Yeah, let us know what we'll be up against any one decides to go postal or somethin'" He knew Katherine and Elena were vampires, he assumed this meant they had powers. Reno was good with bombs and Brennan and Shalimar both came equipped with a skill set that would definitely come in handy.

"Guess I'll see if we can't get some kinda meetin' or somethin' goin'. The first person calls me a cop, I swear to god I'm punchin' their lights out."

Winging it or not, Dean did far better with such situations than Castiel did. The handful of times Castiel had had to interact with people who weren't Winchesters, it had usually ended in disaster -- or at best, mis-communication. Being forced to spend a couple months in the Underworld with just Sam and a handful of strangers had helped, in some strange way, but Castiel was still far more comfortable with letting the humans deal with such things.

He glanced at Dean and nodded. "We're in a rare situation, surrounded by people of myriad abilities. We might as well put them to use." And know what they could be up against, should any situation go haywire.

Blinking at Dean, he cocked his head to the side. "But you often pose as one?"
