“I know why you came over here and the answer is still no. You’re not going to change my mind Blaine.”

Blaine walked down the front steps of the mansion, the path lit by lamps hidden in the lush green gardens. It was a humid night in Los Angele’s, Blaine left his blazer in his room and rolled up the sleeves of his white collared shirt.

He could see a figure sitting on the edge of the pool, and even with his back facing towards Blaine he knew it was Kurt.

Blaine opened the gate to the pool area and walked over to where he was sitting, the strong smell of chlorine reminding him of his youth when he used to swim laps of the pool in the mornings.

Kurt looked over his shoulder at Blaine.

“Going for a swim?” Kurt asked, feigning innocence as he absently trailed his fingers through the water.

“Not tonight.” Blaine toed off his shoes and socks. He rolled up the cuffs of his black pants and dipped them into the cool water as he sat next to Kurt.

They sat shoulder to shoulder, the luminescent surface of the pool reflecting flickering light across their faces. Kurt was wearing a thin white cotton shirt and khaki coloured pants, also rolled up to his knees.

They had been back at the mansion for a week now. Burt wasn’t happy about them leaving, but they all knew it was inevitable. Kurt was still coming to terms with Tina’s actions and betrayal. She had also been friends with him since school, but like Rachel she had become angry and jealous about his fame. The police said that she was remorseful and wanted to apologise personally to Kurt. Kurt was yet to visit her though, the situation was too raw for him and he needed more time before he could see her face to face.

“I know why you came over here and the answer is still no. You’re not going to change my mind Blaine.” Kurt broke the sombre silence.

“Kurt, I just can't stand back and watch as you put yourself in danger again. You know the Grammy’s would be the perfect opportunity for another attack. It isn’t smart Kurt, you know that.”

Kurt had been nominated for ‘Best New Artist’ and was planning to attend the awards on the following Saturday night. Blaine had a bad feeling about the awards. He had a sick feeling that this will be the opportunity for the person who was after Kurt to strike again. Kurt was determined to attend the event, and had been avoiding spending any time alone with Blaine all week in case he used the opportunity to persuade him not to go.

“Blaine, I didn’t get to this place in my life by doing the smart thing every time.” Kurt linked their feet together under the cool surface of the pool.

“Haven’t you ever done something that just didn’t make sense?” Kurt asked “You must have, because no one gets good without it. And I know you’re good.”

Blaine laughed under his breath at the innuendo. He became serious again however as he contemplated Kurt’s words.

“Yeah, I have... once.”

They stared into each other’s eyes, both men seemingly unable to break the contact between them. Blaine knew that Kurt understood the meaning behind his words. Blaine prided himself in his professionalism and his discipline, but somehow Kurt managed to turn these values on their head. This... thing between them was completely irrational and against Blaine’s character, but for some reason he had absolutely no control over his mind, heart or body when it came to the other man.

“I’m going to the Grammy’s to see if I win,” the determination was clear in Kurt’s voice, “and I’ll be fine because I will have you there to protect me right?”

“That’s right,” Blaine said, he grabbed Kurt’s face and kissed him fiercely, trying to use the kiss to say what couldn’t with words. He poured his anxiety, his fear and his desire into the kiss, knowing that it may be his last opportunity to be alone with Kurt before the Grammy’s.

Their tongues sought out each other and intertwined in their familiar dance, sweeping deep in each other's mouths. Kurt's arms gave out at some point and he twisted so that he was lying on his back on the damp concrete floor, one leg hooked around the back of Blaine’s knees as Blaine leaned over him. Both men moaned into the kiss, causing wonderful vibrations to resonate straight down to their groins.

Blaine broke off eventually, Kurt’s head falling back against the floor and breathing heavily. Blaine was panting as well, and he buried his face in Kurt’s neck. He mumbled something vaguely, but neither could register what it was.

Blaine rolled his body to the side away from the pool and they stayed wrapped around each other for a long while, Blaine’s head still in the crook of Kurt’s neck. Eventually their breathing levelled out but neither men were willing to move. Blaine wanted to freeze time and stay with Kurt like this forever, his mind refusing to think what their future would look like after the Grammy’s.

As if life had been placed in fast-forward, the night of the Grammy’s came around before Blaine could come to terms with the fact that he had failed in his mission to stop Kurt from going.

Kurt seemed unconcerned though as he chatted merrily in the limo on the way to the event. He was polished and coiffured by his stylist team, looking edgy but elegant in a dark grey suit that shimmered slightly in the light.

There was a sense of apprehension from the team in the car as they pulled up onto the red carpet, flashes of light from the cameras were bouncing on the windows.

“Why is everyone looking so worried?” Kurt said, unbuckling his seatbelt and arranging his body in preparation to exit the car.

“Nothing bad is going to happen, unless I lose the fucking award.”

With those words, he stepped out on the red carpet, waving happily at the crowd who were screaming his name, begging the star for a brief moment of his attention.

The backstage of the award ceremony was buzzing with people. Women wearing suits, pony tails and red lipstick carried clip boards, directing the celebrities where they were sitting, and when the cue came on for them to go on stage.

Blaine stayed close to Kurt, sussing out the crowd for anyone who appeared mildly suspicious or threatening.

Kurt gossiped and charmed with his fellow celebrities, laughing and joking with the people around him. Occasionally however, his eyes drifted back to Blaine and he frowned as he seemed to remember how exposed he would be on the stage.

Kurt was up next to present the award for ‘Best Urban Contemporary Album’ with a Victoria Secret’s model. The makeup artists finished touching up his face with powder, and he was ushered to the curtain entrance by one of the official women with the harsh ponytails.

Blaine’s phone buzzed in his suit pocket. He was about to cancel the call when he recognised the number of Officer Daniels.

“Blaine Anderson.” Blaine answered the call, not taking his eyes away from Kurt from where he stood near the entrance curtain.

“Blaine, it’s officer Daniels. I have an update about Kurt’s attacker. Tina Chang admitted to telling a man called David Karofsky that Kurt was returning to his father’s home. Our records found that he was in the same year as Kurt but he got expelled for bullying. His criminal record states that he has only received minor infringements for parking fines and speeding tickets since, but he may be a lead. What do you think?”

“I’ll keep it in mind, thanks for letting me know. Sorry officer I have to go.”

Blaine hung up the phone as Kurt walked out to the stage. He watched on a small black and white screen as Kurt linked arms with the model and approached the microphone on the podium.

The tall blonde model smiled at the crowd and lent forward to speak into the microphone.

“It is very exciting to present this award tonight, don’t you agree Mr. Hummel?”

Kurt looked extremely nervous, Blaine thought. He could see the man’s eyes scanning the crowd as they waited for him to respond to the question.

The crowd waited in silence until Kurt seemed to snap out of his gaze, frowning as he looked the words scrolling on the auto-cue.

“Oh yes, very excited.” Kurt read, his voice anything but. “I was disappointed that I wasn’t nominated for this category though.”

“Really? I didn’t know that you sang urban music?”

Another pause. Kurt looked positively terrified now. His whole body seemed frozen under the spot light, his eyes fixed on a point in the crowd.

The blonde smiled, but her eyes were confused. “Mr. Hummel?”

“I don’t.” Kurt said, his voice flat and sounding forced. “But I would have still liked to have won the award.”

A few people in the crowd laughed. Luckily, the blonde model had the sense to take over the next part of the presentation. Kurt stood awkwardly at her side until it was time for them to exit the stage.

Blaine waited for Kurt to come back in the room. When he finally came in, he stormed over to Blaine his cheeks red with humiliation and anger.

“I was just embarrassed in front of millions of people and it’s your fucking fault.” He yelled, pointing his finger in Blaine’s face.

“You have made me into a raving lunatic. I imagined seeing an old bully in the crowd, and the next minute I started to have flash backs of getting pushed into lockers, death threats and sexual assaults in gym.”

“Stop, Kurt! Sexual assaults, death threats?”

“It was just a kiss, and he got expelled for it but it’s beside the point. You have given me an anxiety complex you bastard!”

“Kurt, you have to sit in the crowd now.” Artie came over to them, glaring at Blaine. “The award that you are nominated for is about to be presented.”

Blaine watched helplessly as Kurt was once more ushered out of the room, his mind comprehending what Kurt had just said. Kurt saw this man out in the crowd, he had threatened his life once before and had most likely tried to attack him in his home just weeks before...

“Blaine, after tonight Puck will be in charge.” Artie said, crossing his arms trying to look tough, but coming up short in his glasses and bowtie.

“Don’t be an asshole Artie.” Puck said coming to Blaine’s side. “Some shit just went down then, I know it. Tell me what is so that I can help you.”

Blaine had once found Puck a pain, but tonight he felt a rush of gratitude and affection for the mo-hawked man.

“Puck... I know who is attacking Kurt. His name is David Karofsky, I think he was in your year.”

“I know the fucker all right... tell me what I need to do.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Blaine sent Puck to stand on the edge of the crowd, using their ear-pieces to communicate what was happening in the seated area and back stage.

“Still no sign of him Blaine.” Pucks voice came through the earpiece.

The orchestra’s music filled the hall once more, signalling for the people in the crowd to stop mingling and return to their designated seats.

A man in a tuxedo and a woman in a beautiful low cut red dress walked out on the stage, bantering good naturedly before presenting the award.

“Tonight we are presenting the award for best new artist. The nominee’s are...”

The crowd applauded as each nominee was named and their faces appeared on the large screen. Kurt smiled and waved at the camera when it was his turn, the crowd cheering loudly.

“Blaine... I’ve spotted him, third row, second from the left.”

Blaine’s heart began to pound, and his stomach clenched with fear as he looked out from the side of the curtains to where the man was sitting in the audience. The man was broad and had a shaved head. He clapped politely with the rest of the crowd, but his eyes were drawn  in a frown.

“And the award goes to... Kurt Hummel!”

Kurt’s record played over the loud speaker as he drew his hand over his mouth in surprise. He hugged Rachel and then walked through the crowd to the stage. Blaine’s eyes remained on Karofsky. He watched in terror as Kurt walked up the steps to accept the award and Karofsky stood up from his position in the crowd, pulling what looked like a gun from his front pocket.....

Blaine didn’t think. He ran out to the stage and tackled Kurt to the ground. The fire of a bullet echoed in the room, and the crowd screamed and ducked in their seats.

"He's got a gun!"

Security officers ran out from every direction to pull Blaine off Kurt.

Blaine’s vision became blurry, but he could vaguely see Puck tackling Karofsky to the ground in the audience.

“It’s not me who is bleeding! It’s my body guard! He's been shot! Help him somebody please!”

“Was that Kurt’s voice?” Blaine thought, his world fading to black.

He felt cool hands on his face and a voice in his ear as he passed out...

“Stay with me baby, stay with me. I’m here. I won’t leave you. Baby, you have to stay with me...”
