Just what I've picked up from obempls23 and Wikipedia. He was a contemporary of Crowley, and came out of the New Thought movement right next to Christian Science and a handful of other similar things. He went on to found Religious Science.

The essence of what he's saying in the book also parallels the Emerald Tablet and the Creed.
